Night 59: F11-20 Hallway

Oct 24, 2011 15:54

Anise had only just finished taking inventory of her collected medicine when she heard the telltale sound of the door unlocking. Since this wasn't the first time night had started without any words from the General, she didn't think much of it. She quickly grabbed her nighttime equipment: her meat tenderizer, flashlight, and Tokunaga. Her ( Read more... )

"...but he is personally overseeing a project of great importance. In fact, a few of you were fortunate enough to be selected to help us in this endeavor."

Sonia knew what that meant. Her fists were still clenched tightly when the broadcast ended. General Aguilar wasn't having any luck catching the traitor himself, so he was getting some of the prisoners to do it for him! There was no way they would willingly cooperate, so they'd probably been threatened into it. Berg had said it would be "for everyone's sakes". Maybe that was it--how they'd make sure no one went rogue; the rest of the prisoners would be in even more danger if they didn't catch him or her ( ... )

The intercom announcements grew consecutively more suspicious as evening slowly gave way to night. First, the man named Berg revealed that prisoners were being selected to "help" with some kind of project, and then, after the doors were unlocked…

In the hallway, Tsubaki clapped her hands over her ears, a futile attempt to block out the alarms. "What the--"

So loud! Even so, the robotic voice she had come to associate with I.R.I.S. pierced the cacophony, repeating some kind of order about a Code Red. Almost simultaneously, a glow started up all around them, sweeping along the walls and the floor; it forced Tsubaki to look away before her eyes could adjust.

What was going on!?

Rapunzel had been right behind Tsubaki and followed suit in the clapping of hands over ears (even if that meant she almost hit herself in the head with her own frying pan). "What is that sound? What's going oN!!?" Her voice jumped up in pitch and turned to a pained squeal as she felt a piercing tingle shoot through her scalp. For the second time since lights out, her hair began to glow from roots to tip - and further still as the strands shot out at an alarming speed, out and out and across the floor until they reached their full length.

By the time it was finished, Rapunzel was left standing with her jaw wide open in the middle of the hall, a familiar pile of golden hair at her feet. She was so confused that she barely even registered the pink stuff on the walls at first. "Tsubaki... 'Code Red' doesn't mean 'everyone suddenly gets back what they lost' does it?" she asked with extreme uncertainty.

Between the intercom and the alarms, Tsubaki could hardly hear a thing. She turned to Rapunzel, who, while standing amidst the growing pink glow, had started to emit her own light, this from her hair. Like on the night of their mission, once the golden light had passed, it left Rapunzel’s hair considerably longer than it had been only moments before.

More to the point, the other girl’s hair was representative of her powers, wasn’t it?

Tentatively, she lowered her hands once the deafening noise began to fade. Tsubaki didn’t have any more of an idea what was going on than Rapunzel, but she was thinking along the same lines, herself. “Your powers are back!” Or at least that was how it appeared from where she was standing. Did that mean…

“W-wait, then the emergency…”

Being allowed to return to normal, that wouldn’t happen, right? They’ve never done that before. Not without a handicap. The Institute wouldn’t just let that happen. How could it?

Rapunzel nodded tensely, almost afraid to move or touch her hair under these circumstances. With all the pink glow around them and the blaring noises going off overhead, the sudden return of hair to her head and power in her body seemed to have a more ominous edge to it than it had on the night of the mission.

"Pretty sure they are, yeah. ...What about you?" she asked, wondering if Tsubaki had anything to gain if the emergency really was what they thought.
