Anise had only just finished taking inventory of her collected medicine when she heard the telltale sound of the door unlocking. Since this wasn't the first time night had started without any words from the General, she didn't think much of it. She quickly grabbed her nighttime equipment: her meat tenderizer, flashlight, and Tokunaga. Her

Sonia knew what that meant. Her fists were still clenched tightly when the broadcast ended. General Aguilar wasn't having any luck catching the traitor himself, so he was getting some of the prisoners to do it for him! There was no way they would willingly cooperate, so they'd probably been threatened into it. Berg had said it would be "for everyone's sakes". Maybe that was it--how they'd make sure no one went rogue; the rest of the prisoners would be in even more danger if they didn't catch him or her.
Yet another thing Aguilar and Robotnik had in common.
But Sonia could never have predicted what happened next.
Just as she was ready to leave, the first alarms she'd heard in days went off without warning, making her gasp and whirl around in search of the source. Alarms that loud usually came with spotlights glaring in her eyes, SWATbots closing in, and the occasional leering bad guy or two headed her way. Instead, the intercom went off over the top of everything.
CODE RED.
"Ah!" Sonia looked around, alarmed, as a pink glow rushed into the room and began covering the walls, the floor--everything! Except her, and--after a frantic glance across the room--Mokona. She stared at the wall nearest her, her eyes narrowing slightly. What was this? It looked like a force field, but for what? The building? She'd never seen a shield that could cover a room like this--even the furniture inside it! The closest thing to it she could think of was the defense system Robotnik had had inside his flying fortress, which had been powered by the Chaos Emerald. But if it had been anything like that, she would have been vaporized as soon as it'd hit her.
She shook her head. Whatever it was, it didn't look like it would harm her if she touched it (if it did, she was going to have a bit of trouble getting the door open); it didn't seem to be hurting Mokona. "Mokona, wake up!" Sonia hadn't been able to wake her roommate up before (with all the alarms going off now, she was worried the girl hadn't stirred yet) and she couldn't now, even after giving her shoulder a shake. But at least this way she would be safe (Sonia hoped). If she woke up while she was gone, the princess didn't want her friend to get scared. So she picked up a pen and wrote a quick note:
Mokona,
There's been a 'code red'. I don't know what that means, but I'll let you know if I find out.
I know I can't stop you from leaving, but be careful if you do. And make sure you eat.
Love,
Sonia
She tore the page out of the book and folded it over twice, then gently lifted Mokona's hand up enough to tuck the note under it. Then, after testing the glowing door handle and confirming it didn't hurt when she touched it, she left.
