Night 56: Recreational Field

> ==>The snow had gotten heavier. Rose walked out into it. It was better than being on fire, but slow going. She let one needlewand slide back into her hand, and pointed it at the ground. Nothing. At the air. Nothing. She wasn't going anywhere her own feet didn't deign to carry her. Her powers were well and truly blasted back to square one ( Read more... )

[From here.]

Guy's boots crunched in the snow as he walked onto the powdered field, though it was clear just from the tracks that he spotted in it that a number of people had been this way already. Had there been any fights? Was something waiting out in the dark and the cold for them?

He was going to have to assume that was the case, mainly for the sake of being thorough and not allowing himself to be taken by surprise. He closed the door once both Claude and Anise had exited, and then nodded to the wall that was to their right.

"Let's stick to the wall." Once they reached a part that looked climbable, Guy wasn't going to waste any time getting up and over. He just hoped that Anise would be able to keep him with him and Claude. It wasn't that he didn't believe in her capabilities, but she was much smaller than them. Climbing the wall had to be much more of a challenge for her.

In the end, they'd decided on this route. Claude was glad to see they could reach an agreement together, and hoped that would serve them well in the basement.

Gripping onto his sword, the blond did his best to keep a sharp eye out. Thankfully, he had Anise and Guy with him as well, which would hopefully reduce their chances of getting caught by surprise. Of course, he knew how quickly things could go downhill under certain circumstances -- he still remember that night he'd been poisoned, for instance.

That was why they couldn't afford to be careless. When Guy suggested staying close to the wall, he gave a silent nod in agreement and fell into step with his friends. He wondered if he ought to position himself behind Anise in order to keep their smallest group member safer. Then again, what would happen if Anise accidentally bumped against Guy? That could draw a lot of unwanted attention, so did he need to act as a buffer instead ( ... )

When they stepped outside, Anise pocketed her little flashlight. It was nice, since she wouldn't have to abandon it while climbing. Like Guy, she noticed the tracks on the ground, though she couldn't be sure if the ones they belonged to were still nearby. It was a good reason to stay alert, though ( ... )

It was probably a good idea for Anise to go first, seeing how she had the highest chance of losing her grip and falling back down. Luckily, the snow would be there to cushion her fall if it turned out that Claude couldn't catch her. Guy decided to keep watch, figuring that he could take up the rear this time around.

Though before the girl could even make it all the way up the wall, they were interrupted by a dark-haired man in a uniform -- or more importantly, an armed man in a uniform. His bearing was severe and his tone even more so. It didn't take long to realize that this was a brainwashed patient. He'd heard those words his fair number of times while exploring this place at night ( ... )

Sure enough, someone came to stop them in their tracks. Claude turned to see a man approaching them from the dark, his eyebrows raising at the sight. Great. Dressed differently from the rest of the patients, ordering them back inside -- all signs pointed to a brainwashed prisoner. He held back a sigh, but tried to stay calm as he assessed the situation. The katana wasn't lost on him. Claude knew that, if push came to shove, he and Guy wouldn't necessarily back down from a sword fight so soon ( ... )

So much for getting through unnoticed. Still hanging on the side of the wall, Anise turned her head around to see the man who came to stop them. From the way he looked and the stuff he was saying, he was probably a brainwashed patient. Having gone through special counseling once herself, Anise had an idea as to how they thought and reasoned, and she didn't expect Guy's attempt at negotiating to do any good ( ... )

The girl continued to climb up to the top of the wall and stopped, perched there like a sentry watching the battlefield. She was a ranged warrior then. A child who was simply looking to get away would take advantage of the slight opening she had to disappear over the wall and out of Japan's reach. She remained, however, watching the other two men expectantly. She would be a liability later, but he could take care of her then. Or use a well placed snowball to throw her over ( ... )

While their attempts to be straight-forward and negotiate hadn't gone well, Guy hadn't been expecting too much. That short exchange had at least given Anise the time to reach the top of the wall, though she hadn't jumped over it. She wasn't going to abandon them, and Guy had seen her cast Artes from that position before. She was going to fight as much as this place would let her, it seemed ( ... )

This man wasn't hesitating even though he was clearly outnumbered. Claude didn't know whether that could be attributed to the brainwashing, or if their opponent was really that stubborn. Either way, it meant they had an unavoidable fight in front of them.

He wasn't sure about the full extent of this man's abilities, but hopefully there wouldn't be any unpleasant surprises. Regardless, there wasn't much time to worry about that. The brainwashed patient charged for Guy, which meant Claude needed to do what he could to back him up.

Gripping onto his sword, the younger blond's feet crunched through the snow as he darted toward the other side of their opponent. Then, he leaped forward and attempted to deliver a strike at the man's exposed back.

He might have been aiming at Guy, but he had him and Anise to worry about as well.

Just as Anise expected, the stranger lashed out at Guy, which marked the beginning of a battle. Anise wasn't immediately concerned for Guy, though. The man was surprisingly fast, but she knew her friend could hold his own in a sword fight. He wouldn't be taken down so easily.

That wasn't any reason to relax completely, though. They didn't know what this stranger was capable of, which meant he could get the best of them if they weren't careful. Claude seemed to understand that, and was moving in for a pincer attack. Anise needed to do her part, too.

Raising her meat tenderizer like a wand, she began to gather fonons. A dark fonic glyph appeared at her feet, spreading out in the air around the top of the wall, as if carefully balanced there. Since her friends were so close to their attacker, she wasn't sure if she'd get a clear shot with a fonic arte, but if she saw an opening, she was going to be ready to take advantage of it.

Single-handed, Western style combat. As the blond's weapon came up to parry, Japan saw his hand float where he might hold a sword weapon, or the sword's sheath if it had one. Western combat with a sword like that? An unfamiliar blade in experienced hands was an advantage Japan would not let slide and the Nation smiled slightly. A real battle then. One fit for a war like his, against the West and their ever greedy hands. He would protect Asia since China could not.

How fitting then, that his opponents were both blond and that the gir--

The girl. A magic user. England.Japan pushed back against the blond's sword, using hundreds of years of experience and the strength of a Nation at its peak to help him. From behind he could hear someone coming and he needed to get out of the way before he had his back cut as he'd done not so long ago. Switching his grip, Japan turned and took a deep lunge toward the second opponent, thrusting the hilt of his sword up into the man's stomach. It was times like these that Japan was glad he had ( ... )

Guy had figured that one man with a sword would be something that the three of them could handle, but he should have realized that there had to be something extraordinary about this guy if he'd been brainwashed. That became more clear when their swords clashed against each other; the sheer strength coming from his opponent was so great that Guy was only able to hold up his block for a few seconds before his arm gave out on him ( ... )

Whoa! Anise could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the man break through Guy's defense. That took a lot of strength! In another swift motion, he even drove his hilt into poor Claude's stomach. From where Anise was perched, she could see everything that happened, but there was nothing she could do to warn her friends or stop the attacks. All she could do was maintain enough focus on her casting to keep her arte from dissipating before she could use it.

Fortunately, there was now a little space between the attacker and her friends, which meant an opening for her to use her arte. The bad news was that he was watching her. Was he planning to take her down!?

Before Anise could give that much thought, however, a searing white light was released in the man's direction... and from Claude!? Come to think of it, she saw a similar light a few nights ago, in the forest. What kind of technique was that?

Well, whatever it was, it was Anise's chance to strike. "Here it comes! Negative GateA purple-black glyph, identical to the one beneath ( ... )

The two men were cleared and Japan put his free hand on the short sword at his side when a bright flash of light sent an irritating burning sensation through his skin. He'd been hit in the neck and Japan turned, drawing the short sword as he did so. A gun? An electric gun! And--

A distraction.

His guard had been broken by that smallest of charges and Japan's eyes widened as he realized that. He turned again to check the blond with the sword and heard something far worse than metal coming for him.

"Here it comes!"

...not good.

Before he had a chance to react, a dark glyph appeared beneath his feet and sent shocks of dark energy up around him. The force of it was like a storm and Japan felt the flame sear his skin as he grit his teeth, trying to withstand it. The pain, however, was great even for a Nation and he dropped to one knee, drawing in on himself as the flames circled around him. England. You'll pay for this. The fire died away and Japan opened his eyes, grimacing. It was painful, but he could survive. He would ( ... )
