[from here]Niikura let the door leading in from the previous hallway stay open as he slipped into the next hall, flipping his flashlight on as he did so. It was completely silent, a contrast to the soft undercurrent of chatter that he usually heard as he made his way to wherever he needed to be. [from here]She rubbed her neck as she moved through the open door into a hallway very much like the one they'd just left, but empty. Lily wondered how large the place was, whether someone had a map. How did she describe thirteen years of existence in a mere moment? The gifts alone formed a mountain of parental passive-aggression the likes of which might never be replicated in another universe.

"I lived with my mother, in the post-modern concrete jungle she was partial to referring to as 'home sweet home'." She really, really didn't want to explain human relationships again, even if Lily seemed capable of listening and rational thought. But needs must.

"Were you human? As in, is your current form the one you generally expect to take upon waking up in the morning?"

Again, it took Lily some time to process Rose's words, passing them over in her mind as she tried to place them in memory that might have been hers or might have grown in her during the time before she woke up. They were so pretty. She wished she could talk like that ( ... )
