Day 54: Breakfast

Jan 10, 2011 09:45

For once, HK was working very hard to hide a giddy facial expression as he met his nurse at the door. He'd already hidden his scalpels in his clothing. The wonderful, sharp implements of doom would be needed today. “Statement: Despite my reticence towards all processed meat and plant products, I am experiencing intolerable levels of hunger,” he ( Read more... )

Before she knew what was going on, Claire was awake, sitting straight up in bed like she'd just suffered some massive heart attack or gotten jerked from a serious nightmare. Which was, honestly, more or less the case. Even given the way Bella had reacted and the fact that, apparently, there were dozens of patients just like her within the institute -- even witnessing that Peter wasn't just good at soccer as he'd initially preached and knowing that there was only one explanation for what he had done to that nurse -- there was a huge part of her that was screaming inside.

Her father had spent months upon months drilling into her head that no one was going to just accept her. She had to hide her secret or they'd use it against her one way or another, and now the list of people without abilities who knew about it in Landel's was growing. It was like inviting Landel himself down to the cafeteria and asking if he was interested in cutting her up to see if it healed. On second thought, he probably already knew, and it was a miracle ( ... )

As much as she'd enjoyed the food quality on her previous day, it was hard not to look at it differently when Ruby knew there was a freakin' ape hanging around the kitchen upstairs. The health department woulda had a field day with that shit if anyone appeared to actually give a damn how things were being handled here. But, she'd gotten her knife and made it out alive -- that was the important thing. That was all she had to keep doing.

A nurse urged her to take food even though she was trying to dismiss it for the time being -- so much for tryin' to give herself time to let that thing drift to the back of her mind. So, she grabbed one half of an english muffin and tossed it down on her plate, shooting the staff a snide look as if to ask 'happy now?' Picking the plate up, she turned to carry it to a side table, keeping an eye out for anyone who might actually provide something useful to her to come in ( ... )

[I am good with that! ^_^]And that was that, she guessed. Another night, another day, and hey, look--cut out just in time before the angst patrol settled in for good. Man, she was tired of all this BS. Put the institute aside, and she was tried of the internal drama of existence. And more than fucking tired about worrying about the people she'd come to care about. The guys got back to her quick enough. But that still left some people unaccounted for. The Living Dead Girls Club was diminishing, and Senna wasn't sure if she was the only one yet remaining ( ... )

Naturally. It seemed like every time Ruby wanted to take some time to sit by the curb and observe the other patients rather than bothering to put up with them. Still. It was early enough in the day that she was annoyance-free enough to manage a quickly flashed smile when the dark-haired girl walked up. When she sat down, the smile grew a little strained, but Ruby kept her frustrations quiet. Sure, sit right on down. I'd love the company. Except, y'know, not even close.

Automatically out of sheer force of habit, Ruby gave her a critical once-over, scrutinizing any oddities and assessing the girl. She was just a kid, by the looks of it. No more than fifteen or sixteen, but Ruby was the first to acknowledge that looks could be deceiving in that way. No conclusions until she had a better way of telling. Hey, how's it going didn't exactly set off the supernatural alarm bells, but around here, she wasn't ruling it out ( ... )

[♥ No problem.~ Take what time you need.]Better days was an understatement. Half of Senna wished for the first week that she was here, when she still thought this place was preferable to anything else. Ah, well. She had learned, hadn't she? Was taught with her friends' blood and other patients dying because of her. Fuck. Yeah. This place teaches everyone well. She let out a sigh without thinking. "Yeah, you can say that," she offered, eyes skirting the cafeteria. No Meche. For some reason, this was what bothered her the most. That friend. That agreed to have lunch once they both got out ( ... )

Two nights in a row without getting anywhere wasn't very promising. How did anyone get anything done in this place? Or was Landel just picking on him in particular? In any case, he hoped the others who'd been going to help those taken upstairs had better luck than he had. Then again, if it was that easy to keep them away ( ... )

Remy had removed his sunglasses for the moment, getting himself a better look around the cafeteria and their new uniformed friends. A nurse was glaring at him somewhat fiercely for it now. What? His eyes were just sensitive, weren't they? There wasn't anything about them that really needed to be kept hidden.

He put them back in place with a sigh as he glanced over at his new breakfast companion. Brown-haired teen. Kind of wiry. He smiled at the greeting, giving the kid a mock salute in honor of their new guests.

"Not waitin' on anyone, frere. You go on an' make yo'self comfortable." The mutant took his fork and prodded the English muffin on his plate. Not bad, but he'd prefer something with a little more of that home cooked feel. "Name's Gambit. Been here two days. Got about nowhere last night. Don't know nothin' about dis place you don't."

He smiled again, gave a wink. "Figure dat about covers th'basics, non?"

Why was it that the harder he tried to stay away, the harder it was for Depth Charge to do anything but conk out straight after dinner?

Rubbing agitatedly at his head, the Maximal let himself be hustled out of bed with only a cursory complaint- frankly his processor was overloading too much on its own for him to need to make it worse by putting up a fight, as much as he'd have liked to just out of spite. What better way to make Landel's very own special visitor feel right at home than to give 'em slag and generally be a pain in the tailpipe? Then again, that also sounded exactly like just the kind of thing that Rattrap would do, and if he was really starting to act like Rattrap maybe it was a good thing he'd slept the night through.

Or maybe he was turning into Primal instead, because the one thing he did fight for was the chance to stop at the bulletin board and leave yet another note for a couple of people. Stupid, really, given that there was no guarantee that they’d see it but knowing he’d thrown it out there anyway showed ( ... )

Morning came, even though Kaworu resisted it. The effort had no lasting impact. He wasn't any more tired for it, and it had not slowed down the heavy approach of consciousness. It had only left behind the impression of fruitlessness. Actions in vain. Struggling towards that which was unobtainable. They had only found Shinji because it had been allowed. They had not saved him or reclaimed him, but had been given him back freely. Whatever this place had desired to do to him, Kaworu had been unable to change it. His choices were his own, but they meant little. Still, there were some that still mattered. Kaworu couldn't judge their merit, but he did not regret them ( ... )

One klik Depth Charge had been debating between finding a whole new level of self-pity to wallow in for the day and raising Pit, the next there was another nurse in front of him. Different to the one that had dropped him off, but between the uniforms and the silicon smiles they were all about as discrete as an army of battle drones. Which, really, was a pretty depressing comparison to make; take one down, another one springs up in its place. It was Whack-a-Molebot with syringes.

This particular nurse one had brought a friend with her, and that was where Depth Charge started to suspect a some kind of vendetta at work: he was now babysitting, of all people, a scruffy-haired kid with red eyes. The kicker was he couldn't have been much older than Forte. Nice shot, Landel. Way below the conveyor-belt, but since when did either of us expect you to play fair, huh?At least there were more differences than similarities going on here. For one thing, Newbie had an expression like he'd jacked in to his own personal mainframe at some point and ( ... )

"Kaworu. Kaworu Nagisa." He didn't flinch when the adult leaned in. Almost imperceptibly, Kaworu mimicked the gesture, shifting his weight forward with interest. He met the man's eyes, and tried to construct what thoughts might be behind them. Even the act of asking for a name was met with hostility, although it was subdued. It lacked hate, but reflected distrust and the frustration that Kaworu had seen when the nurse first led him here ( ... )

Carter felt like the worst kind of coward. He'd made several attempts last night to leave his room, all culminating in hesitating at the door and going back to bed again. As much as he'd thought he'd cheered himself up during the day, after he was left alone with the lights out he found himself unable to bear the thought of meeting his shadow again ( ... )

Goku was not very pleased by the selection at breakfast this morning. It made him wish that he had fought a little harder with his nurse earlier. Not that he had been easy on her to begin with. It was just that he couldn't seem to find the strength within himself to overcome such a frail, white witch. The monkey boy had never felt this level of frustration in his life. Or any level of it, to be honest ( ... )

Carter almost made a little 'aww' noise at seeing the little kid. He swallowed the bite of apple in his mouth and extended his splinted hand, only to realize it would be bad for handshakes and replace it with his other hand. And then pull it back so he could put down the apple and then extend his left hand for a shake.

"Andrew Carter," he said cheerily after a full half-minute of reorganizing his limbs. "How're you doing?" At least the kid looked like he was having a nice morning. He also looked kind of J...er...maybe he should just not say anything about it until they knew each other better. Carter wasn't in the mood for getting yelled at again because he didn't understand how Future Japanese People worked.

(Speaking of Japan, how was Miss Aigis? He should check on her.)

Goku looked at the hand for a moment, expecting it to do something before he finally caught on. Unfortunately, Goku's height and the table's width didn't ever agree, and so the young boy had to lean over the table before he could grab Andrew's hand for a shake.

"Okay..." He said pleasantly, wary of his nurse only a few yards away. His attention was brought back to his breakfast and he pouted at it. "They don't have good meat today..." The monkey boy was very disappointed.
