Day 54: Breakfast

Jan 10, 2011 09:45

For once, HK was working very hard to hide a giddy facial expression as he met his nurse at the door. He'd already hidden his scalpels in his clothing. The wonderful, sharp implements of doom would be needed today. “Statement: Despite my reticence towards all processed meat and plant products, I am experiencing intolerable levels of hunger,” he ( Read more... )

Two nights in a row without getting anywhere wasn't very promising. How did anyone get anything done in this place? Or was Landel just picking on him in particular? In any case, he hoped the others who'd been going to help those taken upstairs had better luck than he had. Then again, if it was that easy to keep them away...

Perhaps it was best not to dwell on it too much yet. He'd have to leave a note on the bulletin about it - check up with Lightning or perhaps that boy who'd been asking for help in the first place. What was his name again?

As his nurse led him out of the room, Remy couldn't help but raise a surprised eyebrow at what appeared to be escalated security. Or had they been invaded by some military organization? The men walking around certainly looked military, and the looks they were getting from the staff made it apparent that they weren't in the best of relationships. He wasn't sure whether this was a good sign or not.

He must have been early, as the cafeteria was practically empty when he arrived. Taking his tray, he found an empty seat and just observed for the time being. Later, perhaps, he'd try and find the opportunity to chat up one of the nurses.

Remy had removed his sunglasses for the moment, getting himself a better look around the cafeteria and their new uniformed friends. A nurse was glaring at him somewhat fiercely for it now. What? His eyes were just sensitive, weren't they? There wasn't anything about them that really needed to be kept hidden.

He put them back in place with a sigh as he glanced over at his new breakfast companion. Brown-haired teen. Kind of wiry. He smiled at the greeting, giving the kid a mock salute in honor of their new guests.

"Not waitin' on anyone, frere. You go on an' make yo'self comfortable." The mutant took his fork and prodded the English muffin on his plate. Not bad, but he'd prefer something with a little more of that home cooked feel. "Name's Gambit. Been here two days. Got about nowhere last night. Don't know nothin' about dis place you don't."

He smiled again, gave a wink. "Figure dat about covers th'basics, non?"

"Nah. I won't bother you wit' pointless stuff." Remy glanced at the strange newcomers again, brows furrowing slightly. He lowered his voice. "Might be more interested in discussin' our new guests, if you know what I mean."

Landel would expect them to chat about them, surely, as would the nurses, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to do it anyway. Far be from him to fail to live up to expectations occasionally. True, he'd been the team leader of kids this age, but that didn't mean he couldn't work with them on a more even level. And there again was that warning from Wolverine echoing in his mind about not trusting anyone, but where had Mr. Short and Grumpy gone off to, anyway?

"I'm guessin' dis ain't a common occurrence." Not from the way most of the other patients were looking at them. He doubted that many were as new as he was.

Well, now. That was some information he didn't have. Logan might have mentioned something off-hand in his rather short explanation, but these were much better details if they could be trusted. The boy's nurse having chosen this spot for him that morning was fortunate for both of them, then.

"Dese patients... dey been picked wit' good reason, non? Maybe dis be like checkin' th'cattle 'fore it's loaded onto th'truck." He surely hoped not. If this was supposed to be some sort of training facility, then they were failing on the training aspect. Even if it was just for observation, how could you observe someone's fighting techniques if you limited them? And then, even if the idea was to see how the patient would handle a cap on their powers, why give so little time for actual observing? They seemed to be unconscious for a good portion of the night, and he really didn't like to think about what Landel's lackeys might be doing during that time.

Further contemplation on the subject, however, was halted as his attention was drawn to the food now flying across the room. Apparently, someone had decided that the day the facility was full of military personnel was the best day to make a mess of things for everyone.

"...Not sure I saw dis comin'."

The thought of hiding under the table didn't sit well with Remy at all, but that didn't mean there wasn't any wisdom to it. He was a thief, after all, and knowing when to keep down came with the territory. And it was true - getting himself sedated wasn't going to do him any good when he'd need to be watching the military personnel the rest of the day. He had to be clear-minded to see how they'd react to this.

So he was soon under the table next to Peter, though he was obviously displeased by it. It was a good thing the boy was smaller and leaner, as this position didn't allow for a whole lot of maneuverability.

"Dey come down strict on dis on a good day?" Because if that was the case, who knew what would happen with all the new visitors around. He just hoped no guns were pulled. There wouldn't be anything he'd be able to do about it.

Remy gave a shrug. "I'll manage." He'd definitely fit into smaller spaces before, not that he wanted to think back on some of those times. He continued to watch the mess going on around them with a frown. He understood the boy's concern, and chances were none of these people would get anywhere with all this ruckus, but he couldn't deny that he'd rather be out there joining in right about now. Even if it meant they were sedated for the rest of the day, sometimes people just had to rebel. If there was any chance they might find a weakness they could exploit...

But he remained under the table. This could all be taken in from a distance for now. If was lucky, he'd learn a thing or two and make the sacrifices of the other patients not completely in vain.

Then Peter spoke up again, and he found himself suitably distracted. "Logan?" He hadn't heard from the other mutant since they'd first spoken when he arrived. "You know dat Canadian shortstack?"

Oh? Now there was something he hadn't expected. As far as Remy was aware, Iceman wasn't being held in the Institute with them. Then again, it was possible he was being held somewhere away from the others and he just didn't know about it. Whatever the case, this kid knew more than he expected him to.

The mutant narrowed his eyes. "You could say dat. We known each other a good long while. Can't say I recall meetin' you before, tho'." He leaned a little closer. "Should I reintroduce myself, den, as Remy LeBeau?"

What had Logan said when they'd last spoken? Of the others here, there was Kurt, who he'd spoken to on the board, and Spider-Man. If his description of them being age twelve actually equated to them being in their mid-teens... Did that solve this little matter too? Small asylum, this place was.

"And should I start callin' you Spidey?"

Remy didn't think the kid had much to worry about in regards to keeping his name a secret, but he could definitely understand why he'd want to. He smiled a little once the boy had removed his hand. "Logan mentioned everyone he knew dat was here. I just put th'pieces t'gether.

"I'm just another X-Man, frere. Don't get yo' panties in a bind." Maybe he expected a younger crew. As old as he was, Remy wouldn't have been a part of the X-Men yet, so it was no real surprise that he went unrecognized. He could live with that. (And really, as many X-Men as there were nowadays, he wouldn't be surprised if someone from a more recent time didn't recognize him.

This riot was getting out of hand. Unfortunately, he was distracted enough by the conversation with Peter that he failed to realize there was going to be tear gas involved until it was already being released. He hissed a curse then, trying to cover his nose and mouth.
