Can't find Advent candles? WTF?

I haven't found any since I moved here, but this year I was determined. I have searched in four stores for Advent candles so far this year. At best I was met with confusion and looked at like I was an alien. There weren't even boxes of individual tapers with colors approximate enough to tolerate ( Read more... )

Notice that all of those "family" Christmas movies are all about Santa and the toys--even the supposed message of family is important, etc, is subordinate to "must get those toys out!" Christmas has become a consumer day--I can't even call it a holiday because there is nothing remotely holy about its depiction in the media.

For Advent candles, I'd suggest visiting a local church. Most of them have little gift shops, I know the Episcopalians do.

Yeah. Go into your Church and look for a gift shop.

My former synogague (YAAY JEW) had a nice, but expensive, gift shop and that's where I bought my prayer shawl and keppah for my Bat-Mitzvah. Hand-painted by blind people; it was a skyline of Israel. I should take a picture. I thought it was pretty damn cool.

You have colour-coded advent candles? That's fascinating! Is the pink one for the first or the fourth?

Oh my goodness! I remember the advent wreath! I haven't seen one in years, as I don't really go to church anymore (just for occasions) but my primary school was sooo religious, and we had an advent wreath in every classroom. Hee. Now you've reminded me of all the celebrations!

We had advent wreaths with candles in Germany when I was growing up, but they weren't multi-colored. They were usually white or red, I think. If it's too hard to find the ones you are looking for, just use regular candles. It's the spirit that counts.
