PKT25: Whatever Happened to Phi Kap Guy?

Mar 30, 2022 13:00

When I first came by the house, one of the the first things I saw as I came up the sidewalk was a longstanding piece of Phi Kap culture. Some earlier generation of Phi Kaps had made a human height wooden cutout of a cheerful looking man with an oversized head painted in black and white, waving a card in his left hand. This was Phi Kap guy, who helpfully could be propped out on the sidewalk to guide lost rushees into the house. His outfit, limited as it was to black and white, looked somewhat like a rude boy with a black vest over a white shirt. Phi Kap guy lived in the Red Room when he wasn't being called into duty as a sidewalk guide. Occasionally he'd be hauled somewhere away from the house to serve as a sign post.

A few years into undergrad, Phi Kap guy got a twin, Phi Kap God, who was built for the Greek Week banner competition in what I'm pretty sure was my sophmore year to go along with a Greek God theme to Greek Week. Phi Kap God looked pretty much like Phi Kap Guy, but with a toga instead of a painted on rude boy outfit. This is the only toga I recall anyone wearing at the house while I was an active.

Alas, neither Phi Kap Guy nor Phi Kap God survived my undergraduate years. Adam ( Spring 1997) had a long standing distaste for Phi Kap Guy that was further exacerbated when Phi Kap God joined him. I don't recall all of Adam's complaints about Phi Kap Guy, but at least one factor was the way his mouth was painted. You know those pictures that depending on your perspective can either be a face or a vase or whatever? Well, if you looked at Phi Kap Guy for more than a moment, you'd inevitably notice that the way his tongue was painted made it seem as if a penis was sticking up from the back of his throat. I remember Adam being irrationally irritated about that.

Whatever the reason, one night the two Phi Kap cutouts disappeared. It was widely assumed that Adam made them disappear, but what actually happened to them I never found out. Perhaps they disappeared into a dumpster somewhere on campus, or were hidden in the empty house next door. Or maybe, as one alumni newsletter laughingly stated, they went on the road together like Bing and Bob, never to return.
