I said yesterday that I had been writing something that was out of my usual comfort zone - it simply came to me and forced me to write it down ( Read more... )

This is the first time I've ever read a LotR-fanfic, and I'm glad yours has been my introduction; it's a lovely vignette and can easily be accepted into the background of the original epic without violating its integrity, I think.

Personally, I'd never even thought or wondered about any of the characters' sexual orientation before, and considering that the Lords of Gondor still had a longer lifespan than ordinary humans even in these dark days of the Third Age, so that they're unmarried status while in their 40-s or 50-s never raised any questions with me, I suppose there must be enough of a 'homo-erotic undertone' to the book for me not to be surprised that the pairing, and therefore, your story works...and works well, too.

Thank you! I am so glad that you read, and that it worked for you.

I quite agree that, under normal circumstances, Boromir might have lived to be as old as Faramir (or almost - there is the impression that Faramir is more a throwback to the Numenorians than his brother) - so 100 -120. Théodred might have been considered as heading into middle age, though - Éomer at 93 was considered to have had a remarkably long life for one of the Rohirrim. But, as both heirs are unmarried, there is just room for it to be a possibility...

There is some wonderful LotR fic around - if ever you want to immerse yourself, then both HASA and Stories of Arda have some wonderful stuff on them, and not much dross. HASA is difficult to navigate, though, I find...

What a wonderful surprise this was after a too-long day! I'm quite touched and pleased that you took an offhand comment of mine and created something so lovely and unique and moving out of it. That's the great joy of fanfiction for me, the transformative nature, that we give and take to each other so freely and delightedly. *hugs you hard ( ... )

Ooh - thank you for long critique! It is surprising what a throw away line can trigger - this really came to me fully formed and just needed fleshing out a little.

I'm not sure, even with her 'two husbands', that I envy Éowyn here - realising it is her duty to provide heirs and her only chances are going to be to on the rare occasions that her cousin visits!

I thought of it as a rather dark piece because no-one is really getting a 'happy ever after' - apart, possibly, for Théodred, who does not have to couple with a female when Boromir is not there, and has a better excuse to visit Gondor, or have Boromir visit Rohan, than he had before...

I began to think of him as the dominant one of the three - but that Éowyn would occasionally put her foot down. (“Goodnight, Théodred,” she said, adding firmly “My husband and I will return to our own beds now, and… thank you.”I felt sorry for Éowyn as I wrote much of it; marrying to escape from someone who already makes her flesh creep, losing her virginity when her husband damn near ( ... )

For really? I'm thinking that, once she figured out about the sweat and leather and all (especially that leather glove) they'd be in good shape. Ummm, leather.

I really think her pragmatism (or maybe I'm just imagining her pragmatism) would have helped her carry through - she would have always know that she was destined for some type of alliance advantageous to Rohan. She may have fantasized romance but been ready to accept whatever was set forth for her. Falling in love with Faramir would be a very nice fate for her, when and if you or whoever takes up this tale! And you know I'll be ready to read it and love it whenever, if ever, you get around to writing it.

(Here's another Theodred; I love that his lips are just a little too full, and his ears are just a little too big - makes him look more "real", I think!)

My Éowyn is certainly pragmatic - hence the line about a husband you don't love who won't want a lot of sex is better than one you don't love who wants it often!

I'm thinking that, once she figured out about the sweat and leather and all (especially that leather glove) they'd be in good shape. Ummm, leather.

She has certainly got that idea in mind - and it is certainly why Théodred suggested it... and in part where the title of the story came from as it contains the lines

(A friend with breasts and all the rest,
A friend who's dressed in leather,)

But she can't be sure he'll want to... especially after she's given birth - it might make her too feminine for him to forget it!

Actually the song is very relevant in a number of places - it also contains the lines A friend who'll tease is better , and

And when she's pressed she will undress,
And then she's boxing clever,

As well as

A friend in needs a friend indeed,
A friend who bleeds is better,What a wonderful Beta to remember the song, eh ( ... )

Thank you! It is definitely outside my usual comfort zone, even if I have written a threesome before, so I am so glad that it works.

You seem to have seduced several of us into reading LOTR for the first time! I think it's the knowledge that this was a story which took over your life till it was written; a great feeling I don't often get.

I enjoyed this - the dynamic of the three of them, which works but isn't exactly rosy, is really well drawn. I am something of a sucker for truly pragmatic marriage fic (blame Georgette Heyer), and this is another fine example for my collection!

Hee - come to the dark side my prescioussss... or something!

It just beat me around the head this - I'm so glad that it really does work for people.

You can come and play in our sand-box any time you want a change...

ETA - I meant to say that it makes me write in a very different style to my Buffy stuff, too.

I am really glad that you like this - it felt very 'different' to me as I wrote it - but I am very proud of it when I go back and re-read.
