What's the purpose of essays in a music class?

Because to fully understand music, there is more to it than performing the composition perfectly! There is history to everything and to fully understand the depth that is a piece, you need to know the story behind each and everyone one of them!

It isn't much when you think about it - my focus will of course be on your performance but I want to see just how much each and everyone of you truly grasp what it means to be a musician!
