How to Post Del.icio.us Links to LJ

Jul 08, 2007 01:24

A couple of people have been asking how I got the robot to pull links from my del.icio.us feed and turn them into LJ posts.

It was astoundingly easy, thanks to wistfuljane, who has written the clearest and most user-friendly set of instructions it's ever been my pleasure to follow: [How-To] Delicious GlueI'm not even going to try and summarise. But before ( Read more... )

You know, most of my friends came over to LJ to become involved in various fandoms, but someone the other day told me the reason they made the jump to LJ was for the tutorials. She said you can find a 'how-to' for anything and everything under the sun, and that's what made her want to sign up. I'd never thought of LJ fulfilling that specific need before, but when I think of how many tutorials I've found as a result of stumbling across random entries, or asking a question and being linked to a journal entry, it's interesting.

I'd never thought of it that way, either, because I'm here for fandom too. But your friend is so right. I've found heaps of useful guides on LJ, for all sorts of things. wistfuljane alone has an incredible amount of useful stuff, and I have both "FileManager" and "How To" categories in my Memories.

I like the idea that LJ's becoming a source of information. I know a lot of people who want to join a new fandom end up finding the "Newbie's guide to Fandom X" posts/communities, and I've seen a few people pick up the basics of CSS by getting an LJ and then playing with the layouts. They usually say it's less scary than trying to start with a full-on web page, and the layout help communities are more user-friendly. And almost everyone I know who's ever wanted to figure out how to get the most out of PSP/Photoshop seems to end up on LJ, there are hundreds of graphics-friendly tutorials. It'd be interesting to try and see how many different ways people use LJ to learn new things/develop new hobbies.

*nods* Academia is lagging so far behind in terms of researching these new interfaces and communities. As a fan, I find it a bit annoying, because some conceptual frameworking would be interesting, but it doesn't really matter. As an acafan though, I find it incredibly frustrating. So yes, I'd love more research, especially accessible research, and by people who weren't outsiders--because that just doesn't work very well with online stuff (if it ever did for anything).

Very cool. And I'm very pleased about the more recs thing. :-)

Re: privacy setting del.icio.us doesn't include any links marked as "don't share" out in the dialy blog posts.

As for separate posts, creating different .php scripts (lj-songvids.php, lj-sga.php) should be sufficient. You don't need to have separate xmlrpc.inc files.

I'm sorry for spamming, but if I remember correctly, the bot would pick any links within the last 24 hours regardless of whether it has been harvested already or not. I have no idea how you would work around that except manually - although, I guess you could try "fandomname+fiction"...I don't think it would work though.

Hi, I helped tweak metafandom's lj.php script (to remove whitespace, add lj user tags, etc) and I would be happy to help you tweak your script to split things by fandom if you like, or so any other advanced changes.

I'm slowly working on an automated interface, so that newsletters, for example, could generate their posts using del.icio.us, and have the links all pre-arranged into categories, but that's not going to be ready until, oh, late August, I think.

Appropriately, I'm here via del.ico.us. :)

Ha! That's so apropos.

As for the tweaking, that would be fantastic, thank you! I think amothea was also looking for a way to pull specific tags from her del.icio.us feed. Would the tweaks suit both of us? I don't want to take up too much of your time, especially as your other project sounds so useful. But if the work can help more than one person without much extra efort, it might be worth it?

What do you need from me? And is there anything I can do in return?

Even *more* appropriately then, I'm here via amothea's del.icio.us. I think it entirely right that she should benefit from that!

I guess what I need to know from you is that I understand exactly how you want things to work. Anything tagged "stargate:atlantis" goes into one post, and all other links go into a second post, yes?

As for amothea, perhaps I should contact her directly and find out just what she wants to do. Your needs probably dovetail, but I'll have to know some of her specifics. The rec posts in her journal look more like mine, with links from different fandoms in the same post, but separated into fandom categories. (I myself don't use del.icio.us glue to do this, because I rec on a twice monthly basis, not daily, but I have some code ready that will help out ( ... )

So far I've just been adding all my recs to one post because I save them throughout the day and it's easier for me, but I think for Delicious glue it's easier for users to figure out what fandom it is if there are seperate posts instead of everything thrown together in one post.

I think whatever you can do for cupidsbow is pretty much what I'll want/need.

I can be patient too. :) I've been reccing like this for a year or so longer, I can wait as long as needed. :) Or start figuring out how to write my own scripts. :)

Hey just writing to find out if you've noticed any problems with Del.ico.us glue not working the last day or so? I haven't changed any of my settings but all of a sudden I"m not getting any posts to my account? I was wondering if this problem is only affecting me? or if everyone is having the same problem.

I'd appreciate any and all help.

Sorry for the delay in replying -- I haven't had time to do a proper check, but I think mind hasn't been working either; and I'm pretty sure mamoru22 posted that the one for the sga_newsletter hasn't been working for 3 days.

Not sure what the problem is though. Sorry I can't be of more use. :(

I wonder if wistfuljane or murklins knows more.
