How to Post Del.icio.us Links to LJ

Jul 08, 2007 01:24

A couple of people have been asking how I got the robot to pull links from my del.icio.us feed and turn them into LJ posts.

It was astoundingly easy, thanks to wistfuljane, who has written the clearest and most user-friendly set of instructions it's ever been my pleasure to follow: [How-To] Delicious GlueI'm not even going to try and summarise. But before ( Read more... )

Even *more* appropriately then, I'm here via amothea's del.icio.us. I think it entirely right that she should benefit from that!

I guess what I need to know from you is that I understand exactly how you want things to work. Anything tagged "stargate:atlantis" goes into one post, and all other links go into a second post, yes?

As for amothea, perhaps I should contact her directly and find out just what she wants to do. Your needs probably dovetail, but I'll have to know some of her specifics. The rec posts in her journal look more like mine, with links from different fandoms in the same post, but separated into fandom categories. (I myself don't use del.icio.us glue to do this, because I rec on a twice monthly basis, not daily, but I have some code ready that will help out.)

And I suppose in return you can... be patient with me, because the last tweaks I did for metafandom to enable automatic emailing of their posts (to safeguard against LJ downtime) took a tortuously long time. Other than that, I'm just here to facilitate the world's obsession with del.icoi.us. I need the company!

So far I've just been adding all my recs to one post because I save them throughout the day and it's easier for me, but I think for Delicious glue it's easier for users to figure out what fandom it is if there are seperate posts instead of everything thrown together in one post.

I think whatever you can do for cupidsbow is pretty much what I'll want/need.

I can be patient too. :) I've been reccing like this for a year or so longer, I can wait as long as needed. :) Or start figuring out how to write my own scripts. :)

OK, separate posts. And looking at your tags, I see that you use a recs-fandom format, which will help, because then I can just examine each link to see if it has a tag that fits the format, and then sort by fandom. Easy!

But it still could take a little while because I'm getting married in a couple weeks, and I don't know how my schedule is going to turn out. Probably busy, is what I'm thinking. :)

Hi there, I just got back from my wedding last week, and I'm ready to pick up work on this script thing. I notice that you've stopped posting on LJ and are now posting instead on IL, GJ and LF. A couple questions. Would you like the script to cross-post to all three, ideally? And how would you like to link to usernames? Using the format creates links that are local to whatever site you're on, not to LiveJournal, so they may in some cases point to non-existant accounts, or to the accounts of people who aren't the LJ author you're trying to link to.

Um, that came out sort of confused. Let me know if I should clarify what the heck I'm talking about.

I didn't know a script could crosspost to 3 accounts. :) but if you can pull that off I will not say no to it. If it's too hard to pull off I think my main new account will be IJ or JF.

As for the LJ name thing, the only other option I can think of is to not use and instead just use the lj name like insert name here basically using bold tags, then it won't link anywhere...but people can figure out the name from hitting the links anyways.

Take as much time as you need; the system I've got going at the moment is doing the job, albeit not as elegantly as your script will :)

I've been thinking about the sorting. I actually have two top level categories: fiction and songvids. To complicate things, both are also tagged by fandom. Because I rec so many more stories, in the compilations posts I tend to clump things like this:

SGA stories
All other stories
All songvids

So what I'm wondering is if there's any way to rec songvids as a seperate category even though they are also tagged by fandom? Or would songvids end up in both the SGA and Other fiction posts as well as the Songvid post? Does that make any sense?

If it's not possible to split them, I'm not sure what my second preference would be. Probably:

SGA fiction and songvids
Everything else

At least until SGA is no longer my hot fandom (way off in the distant future :).

*goes to poke at your recs*

I think we can make your first choice work. So, if it's tagged "songvid" then the link goes in the songvid post. Otherwise, look for the "stargate: atlantis" tag and if found, the link goes into the SGA post, otherwise it gets tossed into the everything else post.

Sorry, just thinking out loud. But looks doable.

My recs are... infrequent and pretty much like everyone else's. :)

HI! I got a bit of work done on this before my wedding, but not a lot. Now I'm back though, and so this is a check in to see if anything has changed on your end regarding how you want things to work before I dive back in.

I hope you had a fantastic time! And yes, I think my needs are still the same. *beams* Thank you!

Oh, sweet mercy, I think I've got it done at last! Sort of poked at it over the last few weeks in a sulky way until yesterday it actually had all the pieces. I'd like you to look at a preview of how the posts look here. I took a selection of your latest bookmarks and bookmarked them in my own del.icio.us test account, and then when the script ran it separated them into these three posts.

The formatting is a bit more compressed than what you have now, but I can add in the whitespace if you like. Please let me know if there are any other formatting changes you want done -- it's all quite simple from this stage on.

Oh, and the other thing is that it is possible to get the script to post directly to a comm, if you want.

Yay, you rock!

That said, sorry -- I'm out in the depths of the outback with very slooooooow internet. I'll go have a look as soon as I'm home, mid-week, and can access a web page in less than half an hour.

Oh, yes, take all the time you need, there's no rush. After all, it took me TWO MONTHS to get this far! :)

Heya, I just realised I never heard back from you about the del.icio.us fine-tuning, so now I'm wondering if you didn't get a comment notification?

If you're just swamped, no sweat, but I'd hate you to think I never replied after all the hard work you did!
