The reason for this is pretty simple. Sera Gamble, who was the biggest Sam Girl ever, stepped down last year, for Ben Carver to take the reins as showrunner. Gamble was responsible for all of Sam's storylines over the last couple of seasons(although she refuses to be credited for Soulless. Methinks she protests too much for that failure 'nods')

The rumor is that Carver is more fond of Dean and Castiel's characters. Don't know it that is truth, but the the plotlines of this season definitely support that. Personally, I think that Carver is just as much of a failure as Gamble. Sera was too fixated on Sam, and a change was needed. But, Carver has made too many changes too fast, thus putting this longtime fan off the show in a big way.

Hey you! And yes, I put in my two cents too. Of course, it is very different than your comment. LOL But not too much when it comes to Miss 'Jared please fuck me' Gamble. LOL ;) *hugs*

Yet despite that, Dean's storylines keep getting dropped over and over. Even as we were forced to keep enduring the boring as hell Amelia flashbacks, Dean's far more interesting flashbacks were stopped pretty quickly to focus back on Sam's storyline, (which Carver has claimed he loved, yes it was boring, but that was not the writer's intention)

This is actually an ongoing problem. Every single time we Dean fans hope for a decent storyline for Dean, it gets dropped to once again focus on Sam, over and over and over. It does get rather annoying.

Just look at Dean's pain from hell, dropped. Dean as Micheal's vessel, dropped, Dean as an alcoholic, dropped, Dean in purgatory, dropped with Dean made to apologize to Sam, even though we don't even get a hint of an apology from Sam over the way he's been behaving all season. (and seriously, I want to like Sam, I've always loved his character. But if he doesn't apologize and soon, I will end up hating him, whether I want to or not.)

Exactly this! Annoying and frustrating indeed. And based on at least one of the spoilers recently, looks like to me that they may have found a way to again turn the season's focus back on Sam. Hope to be wrong.

i'm not too shy to say that i've thought sam has been relegated to the background for several seasons now. (i'm bi-bro as far as the show is concerned.)
yes - on the surface it appears sam has equal time but not upon scrutiny.

My beef is that Sam spent the better part of two seasons out of his mind. And it's as if it never happened.

Sam has always been front and center. He has been given everything, including the show; all of it handed to him on a silver platter. So for me, it's a about damn time that Dean gets something...not that this season has done it. This is not a Dean-centric season. It is a boring season and that is why neither of the Winchesters seem to shine the way they used to before Kripke left. And as for Dean having better flesh backs, well he is a better actor so his scenes are usually better than Sam's. They have been since the beginning of time. Jared has even admitted to learning from Jensen since day one. So between the lesser acting skills and the fact that really Sam is just boring anyway, yeah I have thankfully not noticed him much this season either ( ... )

I so agree with your comment. I freely admit I'm a Dean gurl but for me the show is about the brothers and there wouldn't be a show without both, but Sera destroyed any love I had for the character of Sam. And even now with a better show I don't know if I'll ever get that feeling back for Sam.

And sorry to break it to you sweetheart, but you are a Sam girl.

Correction: I am a Jared Padelecki girl. Not the same thing at all.

And as Garth would say, don't hate.

I think Sam has been way in the background this year, but since Sam's emotional life hasn't been explored since season 2, maybe season 3, I'm not surprised. It's discouraging for me, especially because they went with Sam never looked for Dean, and then didn't even give him 2 sentences to explain what he felt after Dean disappeared.

I do like Sam and I really hate the fact that all he has become is wallpaper. I don't think Jensen is a better actor. I think they are both good, so I don't understand the whole ignore Sam feel of this season. As someone mentioned before, at one convention Carver said something about being a fan of Castiel and Dean, but didn't mention Sam. Benny is a character he created, so I'm sure he likes him as well. I'm somewhat surprised about the lack of Sam because Carver wrote two of the episodes that gave us Sam's POV the best, Mystery Spot and A Very Supernatural Christmas. It's sad to me that Sam seems to bore the writers now, but it is what it is.

I agree, both actors are outstanding, and it's a crime that since they are in 'niche' television the rest of the viewing audience doesn't know that.

When you say they haven't explored Sam's emotional life, what do you mean? That's an interesting statement.

I feel that after season 3 Sam's POV was fairly neglected. Sam spends most of the season not talking about what he is doing or how he feels about it. He has become a demon blood addict, but what does that mean to him? We are told by Pamela that he is fooling himself about his motives, but what did he think his motives were? Fans have said he drank the blood because he was arrogant enough to think he could control it, but since there was no lore on the subject I'm not sure what exactly Sam thought he was getting into in the first place. How did he start doing something that most people would find icky? How did Ruby get him started? How did Sam feel about the angels calling him an abomination? We don't know because the writers never told us. We get some insight on his relationship with Ruby in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but because Dean calls a halt saying TMI we go from the first sex scene to Sam pulling demons. Since he needed the DB to do that what actually happened? How did he feel when he started? When did he realize ( ... )

Has Sam been in the background this season?

Personally, I could see how one could perceive it as such but honestly I don't care. Its about time that Sam hasn't been the object of attention for a change. The show's premise from day one, and yes, I've watched from day one, was two brothers criss crossing American hunting Supernatural baddies.

It was NOT meant to be about Sam Winchester who is a self centered hypocritical prick!

Kripke never envisioned it that way and Sera Gamble ruined the show. Supernatural should have ended the way Kripke wanted it to.

Jensen is a far better actor then Jared could ever hope to be. As Fetish has stated, Jared has said he has learned from Jensen. If Jensen wasn't better then where did that come from? Hmmm?

It was intended as a compliment. I'm sure they have both learned from each other. As to who is a better actor, they're both excellent.
