I think Sam has been way in the background this year, but since Sam's emotional life hasn't been explored since season 2, maybe season 3, I'm not surprised. It's discouraging for me, especially because they went with Sam never looked for Dean, and then didn't even give him 2 sentences to explain what he felt after Dean disappeared.

I do like Sam and I really hate the fact that all he has become is wallpaper. I don't think Jensen is a better actor. I think they are both good, so I don't understand the whole ignore Sam feel of this season. As someone mentioned before, at one convention Carver said something about being a fan of Castiel and Dean, but didn't mention Sam. Benny is a character he created, so I'm sure he likes him as well. I'm somewhat surprised about the lack of Sam because Carver wrote two of the episodes that gave us Sam's POV the best, Mystery Spot and A Very Supernatural Christmas. It's sad to me that Sam seems to bore the writers now, but it is what it is.

I agree, both actors are outstanding, and it's a crime that since they are in 'niche' television the rest of the viewing audience doesn't know that.

When you say they haven't explored Sam's emotional life, what do you mean? That's an interesting statement.

I feel that after season 3 Sam's POV was fairly neglected. Sam spends most of the season not talking about what he is doing or how he feels about it. He has become a demon blood addict, but what does that mean to him? We are told by Pamela that he is fooling himself about his motives, but what did he think his motives were? Fans have said he drank the blood because he was arrogant enough to think he could control it, but since there was no lore on the subject I'm not sure what exactly Sam thought he was getting into in the first place. How did he start doing something that most people would find icky? How did Ruby get him started? How did Sam feel about the angels calling him an abomination? We don't know because the writers never told us. We get some insight on his relationship with Ruby in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but because Dean calls a halt saying TMI we go from the first sex scene to Sam pulling demons. Since he needed the DB to do that what actually happened? How did he feel when he started? When did he realize ( ... )

Now in season 8, we have had Sam say that his world imploded and he ran when Dean died, nothing else. How did his world implode and how did he act immediately after the Dean disappeared? How did he decide Dean was dead? What did running mean? The emotional exploration of Sam is completely dead in the water for me this season.

True. The only strong emotions he has displayed are anger and distrust at Dean about Benny. In the S7 finale we saw panic when he was "well and truly alone" but that panic was not followed through in the flashbacks.
