Chapter 1 | Chapter 2

Yuya glanced at Akihiko as they walked towards the place they were meeting the girls. Akihiko looked like he was lost in thoughts and a strand of his dark hair fell in front of his eyes, making him look like a lost and lonely boy. Yuya wanted to embrace him right there and never let him go but the light haired boy knew that it was impossible. Akihiko was so close to him and yet eternities and entire oceans of time and emotions separated them.

The smaller brushed his hand against Akihiko’s hand and the latter lifted his gaze to look at him with a small smile. A surge of pain tore through Yuya’s heart and he felt tears sting the back of his eyes. He couldn’t tell why he felt that way but somehow Akihiko looked so fragile at that moment, like he could break at the softest touch or at a mere word.

“Are you looking forward to the date?” Yuya asked and his voice sounded thick and filled with tears to his own ears.

“Yeah”, Akihiko said and tried to look as happy as possible. “Thank you so much for setting this up.”

Yuya swallowed the words he’d been about to say and just smiled instead.

I would do anything for you; don’t you know that?

As they got closer to the meeting spot, they saw Kozue who smiled brightly and waved at them and they waved back. A girl that was a bit taller than Kozue smiled shyly to them as they walked up to the girls. They greeted each other and bowed slightly.

“This is my friend, Karasawa Naomi”, Kozue introduced the girl who seemed a bit shy.

“It’s nice to meet you, Karasawa-san”, Yuya said with a friendly smile and Naomi seemed to relax a bit.

“You can call me Naomi”, she said with a gentle voice and Yuya nodded to show that he’d understood.

“So where are you taking us today, Yuya-kun?” Kozue asked and took a hold of Yuya’s arm.

Yuya looked down at Kozue’s hand in confusion and then his eyes widened in realisation. No, this couldn’t be happening! He looked at Akihiko with panic in his eyes and he noticed the hurt expression that flashed across the dark haired boy’s face. Yuya shook his head and tried to signal to Akihiko that this hadn’t been his intention at all. Akihiko smiled dejectedly and nodded to Yuya; he knew that his friend wouldn’t do something like that.

“We thought that we could go and watch a movie and then go to a café if that’s alright with you”, Yuya said and tried to sound normal.

Kozue nodded happily and Yuya started walking, Kozue still holding onto his arm. Akihiko started walking a few steps behind them and Naomi walked beside him.

“What kind of movies do you like, Kurosawa-kun?” Naomi asked and Akihiko gave her his most charming smile.

“Please, call me Aki”, he said and Yuya looked at the pair of them over his shoulder in worry, he wondered what Akihiko would do.

Naomi blushed, “What kind of movies do you like… Akihiko-kun?”

Akihiko grinned and replied, “I like most genres actually, not a big fan of the gory stuff though.”

“Ah, I agree!” Naomi said.

The two of them started to discuss why they didn’t like gory movies and what their favourite movies were while Yuya tried to focus on something Kozue was telling him. It was difficult though since he would constantly eavesdrop on Akihiko and Naomi. Yuya felt bad for doing this to Kozue but he couldn’t help it and it wasn’t his fault that Kozue had misunderstood his feelings for her…

Why had she thought that he was the one that wanted to go out with her anyway? If Yuya had wanted to go out with her he would’ve just simply asked her instead of going through the trouble of bringing Akihiko and getting her to bring a friend. People were so stupid with the way they didn’t just say their feelings straight out. Akihiko was stupid for not admitting to Kozue that he liked her. Yuya was stupid for not telling Akihiko that he liked him.

But that was because of completely different circumstances. Akihiko would totally freak out if his best friend suddenly confessed to him and then he’d avoid Yuya for all eternity. Maybe Yuya was making it a bit too dramatised but when it came to Akihiko he couldn’t think clearly.

Yuya barely noticed when they arrived at the cinema and he almost walked into a lamp pole. Akihiko laughed at him and Naomi giggled but Kozue looked at him worriedly.

“Yuya-kun, are you okay?” she asked. “You’ve been awfully distracted the whole time.”

“I’m sorry”, Yuya said and smiled sheepishly. “I have a lot on my mind right now. I’ll pay attention from now on, I promise.”

“What movie do you want to see?” Akihiko asked and the girls pointed at the same poster at the same time.

“I’ve wanted to see that one for a long time now!” Kozue said and Naomi agreed.

“It seems so romantic”, she said. “I loved the drama.”

“Yeah, I like it too”, Yuya said and smiled, he was glad that it was a movie that he might actually enjoy.

“The leading actor bugs me”, Akihiko said grumpily and glared at the poster. “I don’t know why but he bugs me.”

“Stop being silly”, Yuya said and the four of them walked into the cinema to buy the tickets and they also bought soda and popcorn.

Soon they were sitting in the dark, waiting for the movie to start. Kozue was placed furthest to the left, Yuya beside her and Naomi sat furthest to the right so Yuya and Akihiko sat next to each other. Yuya wished that the girls hadn’t been there and that there was only the two of them. It was difficult to ignore the girls however since Kozue was constantly chatting with him and Akihiko was getting a bit too close to Naomi, whispering something in her ear.

Yuya was constantly sneaking peeks at Akihiko and he frowned as he saw how close the boy was to Naomi and that they were even holding hands! Damn, why did Akihiko have to move so fast? And why was he even flirting with Naomi if he was so in love with Kozue? Yuya glared at the dark haired boy and wished that he could grab his arm and drag him out of there.

“Do you want some of my popcorn?” Kozue whispered to Yuya and dragged him out of his thoughts.

“No thanks”, Yuya smiled at Kozue. “I’m fine.”

“Okay”, Kozue seemed satisfied when Yuya paid attention to her and smiled at her.

The movie started and Yuya really wanted to pay attention to it since he’d liked the drama but he couldn’t focus on it since Akihiko and Naomi were whispering to each other and giggling almost the entire time. It didn’t help that Kozue seemed to be trying to hold his hand and was glancing at him now and then. Yuya frowned when he saw that Naomi kissed Akihiko’s cheek and then giggled. Already?

Akihiko glanced in Yuya’s and Kozue’s direction and frowned when he found that it wasn’t the right person that was paying attention to him. He looked questioningly at Yuya who was glaring but quickly looked away. Akihiko blinked in confusion but then he went back to whispering sweet nothings in Naomi’s ear. The girl was attractive enough, to be frank she was a bombshell, but she wasn’t who Akihiko wanted.

The reason to why Akihiko wanted Kozue so much would be kept a well guarded secret… He didn’t want anyone to know about his past and about the burden that he carried.

When the movie was over, Yuya didn’t think that he’d seen even a second of it. The others didn’t seem to have either and they all smiled sheepishly.

“I think that I’ll watch it some other time”, Naomi said and Kozue and Yuya nodded but Akihiko just shrugged.

“Is there any particular café that you girls like?” Akihiko asked with a charming smile. “I don’t go to cafés very often so I don’t know any good places.”

“Are you including me with the girls?” Yuya asked suspiciously and Akihiko grinned teasingly which caused Yuya to chase after him. “Take it back or I’ll tickle your collarbone!”

“You’ll have to catch me first!” Akihiko hollered and ran faster.

The girls sat down on a bench in the park they’d walked to and watched Yuya chase Akihiko on the field of grass.

“They’re so cute”, Naomi said and giggled.

“Yeah, they are”, Kozue said with a smile. “I saw that you seemed to be getting very snugly with Akihiko-kun.”

Naomi blushed and covered her cheeks with her hands, “I don’t know what flew into me, he’s just so charming.”

“I haven’t noticed that before”, Kozue said with a thoughtful expression on her face. “To tell you the truth, he was the one who caught my eye at first since he’s so handsome but then he seemed so awkward and kind of cold. Yuya-kun has only told me good things about him though but Akihiko-kun has never showed any of those qualities in front of me.”

“That’s strange”, Naomi said and frowned.

“Maybe he doesn’t like me.”

“Or maybe he didn’t want to be too charming in front of you since he knew that Yuya liked you and he didn’t want you to fall for him instead.”

“That must be it”, Kozue said, smiling widely.

The chase had come to an end and somehow Akihiko had ended up straddling Yuya who was lying on the ground, and was busy tickling the smaller boy. Yuya was breathless because of laughing too much and he tried to push Akihiko off him.

“You’re a girl, just admit it”, Akihiko said with a wide grin and tickled Yuya some more.

“No, I’m not”, Yuya gasped out in between laughter. “Stop tickling me!”

“You’d be very pretty as a girl”, Akihiko said, suddenly serious and Yuya stared up at him.

“What?”

“Sometimes I wish that you were a girl because you seem to be the only one I can stand being around for a longer time… If you were a girl I could marry you and live happy somewhere.”

Yuya’s heart was beating so hard and fast that he was certain that Akihiko could hear it. What was the dark haired boy talking about? Could it be Akihiko’s way of telling him that he liked him but that he didn’t want to be gay?

Then the moment was broken when the two girls walked up to them.

“Are you guys done now?” Kozue asked. “Naomi and I have decided on a café while you were busy playing.”

“We weren’t playing”, Akihiko protested as he came to his feet and reached out a hand to help Yuya stand up.

Kozue and Naomi raised an eyebrow each and looked at the boys with amused expressions on their faces. Akihiko grinned sheepishly and Yuya squirmed a bit and brushed some grass from his clothes. The girls started leading the way to the café and Akihiko and Yuya followed a bit behind them.

“What you said earlier…” Yuya began but Akihiko interrupted him.

“Forget about it”, Akihiko said and he refused to look at Yuya. “I must’ve hit my head or something.”

Yuya was disappointed by Akihiko’s reply and they walked the rest of the way in silence while the girls chatted about something that Yuya didn’t bother listening to. The café they had chosen was small and cosy and it had delicious milkshakes. Yuya bought one with pear flavour for Kozue and one with chocolate flavour for himself. Akihiko and Naomi decided to share a huge one with strawberry flavour.

The light haired boy watched as Akihiko and Naomi drank from the same glass with straws, their heads close together. Yuya had understood that Akihiko was doing everything in order to make Kozue jealous but obviously it wasn’t working since Kozue didn’t even look at the pair. She had her full attention on Yuya and he was getting quite tired of it but he still liked Kozue as a friend so he made an effort to be nice to her.

When they’d all finished their milkshakes, they realised that it was getting late and that they had to go home. Yuya was surprise and hurt when Akihiko kissed Naomi goodbye on the street, right in front of everyone. Akihiko wasn’t supposed to kiss anyone but him! He knew that it was just wishful thinking but he couldn’t help it. Yuya settled for giving Kozue a quick hug and then waved goodbye and quickly started to walk away from there.

“Yuya, wait up”, Akihiko said as he came running after Yuya.

“You seemed to have a great time”, Yuya said grumpily and Akihiko shrugged. “You shouldn’t be using Naomi-chan like that; it’s not going to work.”

“You never know…”

“I do know”, Yuya snapped. “You’ll just end up hurting her like you’ve hurt all those other girls before her. Why do you keep doing that?”

To Akihiko’s surprise, Yuya was crying. Yuya wiped away the tears and walked faster to get away from Akihiko but the taller boy stubbornly followed him.

“Yuya”, Akihiko said pleadingly. “I know that it’s wrong but I can’t help it.”

Yuya stopped walking and turned around to face Akihiko, “If you know that something is wrong, you don’t do it! It’s as simple as that.”

“No, it’s not”, Akihiko’s expression turned sad. “I’ve done so many things that I regret but I have my reasons… I know that I’m screwed up and I need help.”

Yuya stared at Akihiko and Akihiko stared back. They stood like that for a long time before Yuya finally spoke up.

“Come on, let’s go home.”

Akihiko nodded and followed Yuya to his apartment.
