Chapter 1

At lunch, Yuya was surprised that Akihiko didn’t sit down with his usual gang to eat. Instead, the black haired boy grabbed Yuya’s arm and dragged him to the bathroom which was empty, thus allowing them to talk in privacy.

“You’ve got to help me, Yuya”, Akihiko sounded desperate.

“With what?” Yuya was truly confused and he stared at Akihiko with wide eyes.

“I want to make a good impression on Kozue.”

Yuya blinked, “On the new girl? Why don’t you just approach her like you normally approach girls?”

“I don’t know”, Akihiko said and ran a hand through his silky hair. “She’s special somehow… I can’t just walk up to her and flirt. I don’t think it would work on her and I don’t want just a casual thing anyway.”

The pain that Yuya had felt in his chest since he had seen how Akihiko had looked at Kozue intensified and he had to lean against the wall to keep standing. Why did Akihiko have to ask him for help? Why couldn’t he just ask Sosuke or one of the other guys?

“Are you sure that I’m the right person to ask for help?” Yuya asked and his voice sounded weak to his own ears. “I don’t have any experience with girls at all.”

“But maybe you could become her friend”, Akihiko said pleadingly. “Girls like to spend time with you as a friend, right? You could talk to her and in a discreet way mention what a great guy I am.”

Yuya stared at Akihiko in disbelief but he sighed, defeated, when Akihiko used his best puppy eyes. The light haired boy would do anything for the other and he cursed his own weakness. Just for once, he wished that he could say no.

They walked back to the classroom and Akihiko sat down with his usual gang while Yuya, after a look from Akihiko, approached Kozue who was sitting alone. She seemed to be a bit shy and she was looking around warily as if the class was a pack of hungry wolves waiting to devour her.

“Hi”, Yuya said and used his widest and most friendly smile that he knew people liked. “I’m Ishida Yuya. Can I sit with you?”

“Sure”, Kozue said with a small smile and Yuya sat down and unpacked his lunch. “Ah, that looks really good! Who made it?”

Yuya gave the girl a surprised smile, “I made it, I live by myself.”

“Really?” Kozue’s eyes widened and Yuya had to admit that she was very cute and he could see how a straight man would easily fall for her. “That’s amazing; I could never survive living by myself.”

“I’m sure you’d do fine.”

“I don’t like being alone too much.”

Yuya wanted to hate her, he really did but it was difficult since she had such a lovely and cheerful personality. She was a bit shy at first but by the time the lunch break was over she was talking to Yuya as if they’d been friends for a long time.

When they sat in their seats and the next lesson began, Akihiko leaned over and whispered to Yuya, asking if he’d told Kozue about him. Yuya’s eyes widened as he realised that he’d completely forgotten the reason to why he’d approached Kozue in the first place. Akihiko pouted a bit when Yuya told him this but then he said that there was plenty of time and that Yuya could do it the next day. Yuya smiled weakly and nodded.

That day after school, Akihiko once again followed Yuya home and kept pestering him with questions about what Kozue had said and what she was like. Yuya replied to all of the questions but he was doing it with a displeased expression on his face and finally Akihiko asked what was wrong with him.

“Nothing is wrong”, Yuya replied. “I just don’t want to talk about Kozue all the time.”

“Don’t tell me”, Akihiko said in an accusing tone and Yuya got worried that the boy had actually figured out that he was in love with him. “You’re in love with Kozue, aren’t you?”

The question surprised Yuya so much that he burst into laughter, “No, not at all.”

“Why not?” Akihiko asked then and Yuya blinked. “Isn’t she good enough for you?”

“That’s not it”, Yuya protested. “She’s a lovely girl but I don’t really have an interest in girls, I have to focus on my studies.”

“That’s boring… but I’m relieved.”

Yuya looked at Akihiko questioningly and the boy explained, “I’m relieved that you’re not in love with Kozue and I’m relieved that you’re not interested in girls because that way I don’t have to fight for your attention.”

Yuya didn’t know how to reply to that; sometimes Akihiko confused him with the things he said. They walked the rest of the way to Yuya’s apartment in silence and Akihiko settled in front of the TV while Yuya cooked. Words weren’t really needed between them since they knew each other so well. At least Yuya knew Akihiko really well and Akihiko didn’t seem to care about how much he knew about Yuya.

This time they ate their dinner in front of the TV, sitting far apart from each other on the couch. The mood was completely different from the day before and Yuya didn’t like it at all. Akihiko seemed so distant, even more than before and Yuya felt like he couldn’t reach out and touch him.

“Thanks for the food”, Akihiko mumbled when he’d finished eating and he stood up. “I’ll take care of the dishes.”

“No, it’s okay, I can do it”, Yuya said but Akihiko shook his head.

“I want to do it… as a thanks for everything you’ve done for me.”

Yuya blinked and was about to say something but Akihiko took their plates and fled to the kitchen. The light haired boy really couldn’t understand what had flown into his friend. Somehow it almost seemed like Akihiko was saying goodbye in a way. Yuya frowned and shook his head to get rid of the thoughts invading his mind.

Akihiko’s voice broke through his thoughts and Yuya looked up to see the dark haired boy standing in front of him, looking kind of lost and lonely.

“I’ll go home now”, he said.

“You can stay if you want to”, Yuya said.

“I better go home… I don’t have clean clothes either.”

“Okay, I’ll see you at school then.”

Akihiko stayed where he was, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot for awhile before he finally said goodbye and left. Yuya looked at his front door with a confused frown and he didn’t know why things felt so uncomfortable between them now. It had all been fine the previous day, before Kozue… before the stolen kiss.

Yuya continued to eat lunch together with Kozue everyday and sometimes he snuck in stories about Akihiko and what a great guy he was. The boy’s eyes would light up every time that he talked about Akihiko and he would smile dreamily. Kozue would listen with a small smile on her face and ask something now and then.

They talked about other things as well, of course, like cooking which they both enjoyed and about what books they’d read. Yuya felt that he had a really good connection with Kozue and they had fun together. He didn’t think that he’d ever had such a good connection with Akihiko and that thought hurt.

Akihiko would keep asking Yuya questions about Kozue but he didn’t follow Yuya home anymore. It was like there was some sort of a barrier between them and Yuya missed the other terribly.

After three weeks had passed, Yuya got tired of Akihiko’s constant questions.

“Why don’t you just talk to her yourself?” Yuya snapped after another question about what Kozue liked.

Akihiko stared at him in surprise, “Yuya?”

“I’m tired of answering your questions”, Yuya said, clearly annoyed. “Just talk to her yourself otherwise you’ll never get to be together with her. I’ve already told her a lot of good things about you so that should do.”

“But it’s hard”, Akihiko whimpered and Yuya rolled his eyes. “Can’t you like ask her to come with us to the movies this weekend or something?”

Yuya raised an eyebrow, “What? Like all three of us will go?”

Akihiko nodded eagerly and used his puppy eyes again and Yuya sighed and gave in, as always. Once again, he cursed his weakness and kicked at a stone on the road that flew in an arch into a bush.

“Fine”, Yuya said. “I’ll ask her if she wants to go, maybe it’ll be best if I tell her that she can bring a friend as well.”

“Then it’ll be like a double date”, Akihiko said with a wide smile.

“Great”, Yuya muttered. “Just great.”

***

Yuya couldn’t say that he was in the least bit excited when the weekend arrived and he was supposed to go to the movies with Akihiko, Kozue and one of her friends from another school. He’d rather just stay at home and study or spend the day in front of the TV but instead he had to dress in nice clothes and make sure that his hair looked okay. Akihiko had told him to so he’d better obey.

Akihiko knocked on Yuya’s door at least two hours before they had to leave and Yuya raised an eyebrow but let him come in.

“I couldn’t stand waiting around at home”, Akihiko said with a sheepish grin and then looked at what Yuya was wearing. “You look nice today; you made an effort like I told you to.”

“Yeah, your word is my law”, Yuya said sarcastically and sat down on the couch, crossing his arms.

“Why have you been so grumpy lately?” Akihiko asked and sat down beside Yuya, close enough so that their legs touched.

“I haven’t been grumpy”, Yuya muttered and Akihiko raised an eyebrow. “Okay, so maybe I have been but you’ve been so strange lately… like avoiding coming to my apartment and stuff.”

“It’s just something my parents said… you don’t have to worry about it”, Akihiko gave Yuya a crooked smile.

“What did they say?” Yuya frowned.

“I told you that you don’t have to worry about it”, Akihiko avoided to look at Yuya.

“Please tell me.”

“No!” Akihiko shouted and surprised them both.

“Fine”, Yuya said and he felt a bit hurt that Akihiko didn’t want to tell him; there was a time when they used to share everything. “Then don’t tell me.”

“I’m sorry, Yuya.”

Yuya was surprised when Akihiko suddenly embraced him and held him close. Akihiko had a tendency to sometimes be a bit too affectionate but he had never held Yuya like this, like he was something precious. Yuya frowned; he let his imagination run away with him again.

“It’s okay”, Yuya said and patted Akihiko’s back a bit awkwardly.

“I wish that I could tell you but I think that it would hurt you so it’s better if I don’t”, Akihiko mumbled.

“You don’t have to protect me… you can tell me.”

Akihiko didn’t answer; instead he held Yuya even tighter. Yuya closed his eyes and a tear rolled down his cheek; he quickly brushed it away before Akihiko would notice anything. The dark haired boy sighed softly and buried his face in Yuya’s shoulder.

“Things at home… are bad”, Akihiko whispered but Yuya could still hear him clearly. “I’ve never brought you home for that reason.”

“It’ll be alright”, Yuya said and stroked Akihiko’s hair soothingly. “You can stay with me if things become too bad.”

Akihiko lifted his head and looked at Yuya, “Really?”

Yuya nodded and gave Akihiko a small smile, “I’m sure that my parents wouldn’t mind.”

“You’re the greatest, Yuya!”

“I know”, Yuya grinned. “Now come on, let’s continue getting ready for our date.”

Yuya’s heart flipped when he said ‘our date’ and he wished that it was just him and Akihiko, with no girls.

“But we’re already dressed”, Akihiko said.

“Yeah but now your hair is a mess and besides, we need to eat something before we go.”

“Won’t we eat with the girls?”

“For the first day we should treat them to something sweet, if we treat them to anything at all”, Yuya said. “Dinner is too much for a first date, then you might not have enough things to talk about.”

“How do you know stuff like this?” Akihiko asked in awe.

Yuya smirked, “You said it yourself: I’m the greatest.”
