02 → you who have come from my old country

It's been two of the local weeks, and I'm still not certain we aren't stuck in the realm of a particularly capricious god. Vanishing and switched possessions, strange outfits we can't be rid of? It's not the province of a mortal mind ( Read more... )

You aren't alone in that supposition.

I read "dragon," and only that.

I assume this is one of those things best discussed in person. This is a wondrous place, but rather ominous, too.

What do you understand it to mean, then? What kind of creature?

Very much so. I am perhaps a little more cautious than most, though.

A creature many times the length and weight of a man, possessed either of two limbs or four, covered in hard scales and with no small amount of spines. Some possess a pair of wings, but do not require them to fly. They are meat-eaters and man-hunters when they can manage it. A dragon is cunning but has not human intelligence, they hunt singly or in pairs, and use claws, fangs, and great magical prowess to achieve kills.

That never hurts, I suppose.

That both seems and doesn't seem to fit. A dragon isn't like a human in wisdom, but... I can't say. There's a gap. One would only hunt men in retribution, though.

Thanks. Maybe I can piece it together.

Dragon! There are two here!

Very well. I guess I meant more what you thought one was like.

Two? I'd heard of one, the one that used to belong to the vanished officer--Mustang?

Big and fast and good to race.

Yes! Lezard has one too! I have raced it. I lost but it was challenging!

All true, I should think, even if I'd have to question your wisdom for daring such a challenge. You don't lack courage, that's for certain.

And Lezard is?

Hunting is not outlawed, but do not hunt the farm's livestock and do not hunt pets. I suggest that you make the fullest use of whatever creature you are able to bring down as well and do not hunt frivolously.

Understood. It's not such a sport I'd hunt for more than my own needs. I might be persuaded to some lengths for a good hunting bow, though. It would make for cleaner kills.

You're with the Watch, then, or some other authority? I don't think I caught your name.

Yes, I am Handmaiden and I am the second-in-command of the Watch. Our captain is Stoneface, but he is among those missing at present.

Stoneface. Youth mentioned that name to me before. I hope he returns safely.

I'm Hawk, if I didn't mention. A pleasure. If you're the heads of the Watch, who captains the Guard?

I haven't, other than the red one that lives under one of the islands, but it's a very familiar... idea. It's significant. You could even say crucial.

Significant? They're pretty much overgrown lizards with wings.

What do you know, that sounds somehow right, too.

I'm starting to think I won't make any sense of this.

It says dragon--is it supposed to mean more?

And yeah, we let new folks pay in installments. It's always good to be prepared for those caprices.

crimson_seeker July 16 2010, 19:45:41 UTC
Yeah, it is. We talked about some of it.

That's good to know. I've got by with a knife and some creative thinking so far, but I'd feel better with a proper weapon in hand.

feathered_earth July 16 2010, 19:59:00 UTC
They're... more to you, from what you said, right? I know the kind of dragon that Paladin wrote about, ones that hunt humans, but I also know there are dragons that are friendly. And [pause] with powerful, good magic, although I don't think the ones I know are gods. They're still living beings.

Well, a longer blade should give you more time for that creative thinking.

crimson_seeker July 16 2010, 20:57:39 UTC
Divine magic, sure, though I'm not sure I'd say it's "good" in the way you seem to mean. Gods, living things. Those can be the same.

That's what I'm counting on. Better yet if it comes with a pole attached.
