Is is possible for a data storage card in a digital camera to become compromised? For instance from exposure to a magnetic field, or something of the sort. My camera hasn't been working properly in a long time..it still takes photos, but they are usually fuzzy or have lines on them. as far as your camera goes, yes it it possible to have a data card go corrupt, if you are in the middle of "dumping" data from it and it loses power or gets disconnected mid-write it can corrupt the data on the card, but it sounds more like your camera may have had a drop or got a bit of H2O vapor in with its CMOS or primary circuits... I would suggest taking it to a digital camera shop and have them give it a physical (so to speak). If there is anything wrong with it I doubt they'd be able to fix it, but they may have other options or tricks up their sleeves, helpful ones even.

I second that, a bad card would not cause errors in the files themselves but problems with the files; Unreadable, not writing, weird characters. These errors seem like they are from the image sensor its self. If its a point and click most times its cheaper to get a new one than to fix it. Sorry.

If you want to test if its the card, if you camera shows up as a drive, copy a few files to the card. Disconnect the device and then re-attach it and try to read them.

Your camera is haunted. Wipe the lens with holy water.

Seriously, I have nothing worthwhile to contribute. I've never had that problem. Does yoru camera have internal memory to store photographs if there is no data card? If so, how do those pictures look?
