maggie's recovery is like lightning. her leg was only ever a little bit swollen and now it's mostly normal - it's not even red around the staples. her gait is good and she's using the leg at about 75%. this morning, we walked around the island, and then up and down the street. she would like to walk farther, she says. knee what? what surgery ( Read more... )

I'll tell you, I was SO WORN OUT from the pain and compensation that when I got my first hip surgery it was awful. When it needed a redo/tweak a couple years later, I was smart and rested the week before. It made a world of difference. Perhaps that is what's going on with her (minus the planned resting).

the theory is that she was in a lot of pain from the torn meniscus being all grindy in her knee, and now that that's gone, she feels much better despite the surgery (they have to shave off some bone and install some hardware), but that doesn't explain the lack of swelling and serious bruising. maybe the surgeon was more on her game this time?

It's been ten years since the second surgery, but I seem to recall everything was better. I didn't bruise the second time. The same surgeon too (if you ever need a crack hip/knee surgeon for humans let me know). I'd lay money on the likelyhood that the pain and compensating affected her in ways we won't know--just enjoy the pleasant surprise.

Glad to hear she's doing so well. And it's hard to reason with a dog that they need to take it easy when they think they're doing fine. :)
