I seem to be unable to keep a manual can opener (of this general sort) for more than a year or so before something snaps, dislocates, or whatever--I fear my mechanical illiteracy is hanging out here--with the result that the handle no longer operates the circular blade. What should be the life expectancy of such an appliance, and is there anything

I still use the one I stole from my mom when I went to college in the 90's. I toss it in the dish water every once in a while, and that's about it.

Not sure - we had one that stopped working from being used so much. I got a new one at the dollar store in a pinch and it's been working better than any other can opener I've ever used

I strongly recommend OXO goodgrips can opener. I have had mine for 12 years and other than putting in the dishwasher, haven't done a thing to it.

Yeah, my husband & I bought our Oxo one ...I don't know how long ago, but it was in our first apartment together, so more than 9 years ago but less than 14. It's just as good as new.

That said, I think we also don't put a super heavy load on it. It is used probably once weekly, on average. I don't know how it would hold up if we were using canned goods daily.

I have a Swing-A-Way wall mounted can opener that my Mom received as a wedding gift in about 1961. Works fine.

You might want to step up your game and buy one at about the $10 level.
