Intro post - and friending meme!

Hi there! *waves madly*

We're escape_vitriol and tsilvy (currently speaking is escape_vitriol; hi!) and we are both of the firm opinion that - what with the fierce Spock and McCoy factions and the ginormous STXI fandom - TOS Kirk doesn't get enough love. And so we started this comm to show him some. Admittedly it's sort of inspired by the (other fandom) communities hoodie_time and sick_wilson, but well...we're Jim-oriented, and hurt/comfort oriented, and here we are. :D And we're sure there are others of our ilk around. Those, that is, who love Kirk for who he really is - for the exceptional commander he is, and the exceptional man.
The TOS universe is such a marvellous sandbox to play in, and there's so much in canon that begs for fic (or other fanworks) to be created - and that's just a part of all the h/c possibilities there are. From the horrors of Tarsus to - well, perhaps a simple cold - what hasn't the good Captain gone through?

So we're getting the community started with an introductory rec list - and a friending meme! Come on in and play, do!

First, here are a few particularly gorgeous Kirk hurt/comfort fics we've come across during our time in fandom:

Title: My Captain
Author:
kcscribbler
Rating: K+
Pairings: none
Summary: Five reasons why the crew of the Enterprise would follow James T. Kirk to Hell and back, and one reason why he would do the same.
Reccer's notes: This is a gem of a fic - as are most of the author's other TOS works. Though this is a character study of Jim, her skill in capturing each character to a T is evident in every sentence - as is her gentle understanding and acceptance of the Captain, flaws and all.

Title: Of Spiderzillas and Warmth Without Fire
Author: SpiritBearr on ffnet
Rating: T
Pairings: none
Summary: They've been lost, stranded, injured, trapped and exhausted together before. Many times. But this is, perhaps, just a little unique. Okay, maybe more then a little.
Reccer's notes: This author too is marvellous! She uses the first person with deftness and grace, and her settings and original characters sparkle with vivacity. Also, she captures the wilder, slightly crazy side of Jim to absolute perfection.

Title: Into the Maelstrom
Author: Lil black dog on ffnet
Rating: K
Pairings: none, though there's certainly more than a hint of Kirk/Enterprise.
Summary: Her gaze settled on the lone figure, seated in a dark corner. He'd been drinking steadily, had refused to let his waitress clear away the used glasses, the substantial number of empties strewn about his table providing his only company for the evening.
Reccer's notes: This is a beautifully written, heartbreaking look at Jim Kirk after the five-year mission - the greatness of the commander, and the vulnerability of the man.

Title: The Dragons of Veyga
Author: Closet Scrawler on ffnet
Rating: T
Pairings: none
Summary: Kirk and Spock must secure a trade agreement with a pre-warp society, and get caught in the power struggle between the planet's two largest factions.
Reccer's notes: This is a long fic which unfolds exactly as an episode would. The planet and its society are perfectly believable, as are Kirk and Spock's interactions with both, and there are so many little nuances in the writing that make this fit seamlessly into the TOS universe.

Title: Empty
Author: louiseb on ffnet
Rating: T
Pairings: Kirk/Chapel
Summary: Kirk wakes up to an empty ship - 430 men and women appear to have vanished into thin air. It's exhilarating, liberating, baffling in equal measure. But it's not a no-win scenario.
Reccer's notes: This pairing might not be everyone's cup of tea - hey, I don't actually go for any pairings all that much -  but trust me, even if it takes looking the other way, give this fic a try. I love how the author writes the Kirk/Enterprise equation, and she writes Kirk himself well, too - just risqué enough, just controlled enough, just on-edge enough here.
(There's also an M-rated explicit version for those who'd like to give it a try.)

(Edit: The standard rec post format does include tags, but these stories encompass a whole lot of those, so listing them in a multipurpose post such as this would just complicate matters. Let's just say...surprise yourselves? =D)

And now for the friending meme - everyone is welcome, so jump right in! All you have to do is copy, paste, and fill out the comment form from the text-box below as a comment to this post, say hi to anyone you think looks like fun, and hopefully make some new friends in the process. \o/
