Back to The Juggs Inn

Ros and I entertained our neighbour Amelia yesterday with lunch at The Juggs Inn, Kingston. It would have been her 52nd wedding anniversary although her husband died almost six years ago. She doesn't get out much and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. The weather was fine, clear blue sky and 6⁰C.

Here's the problem with American F&C: you generally don't get peas with it! I really like peas! You get F&C, and the fish is pretty good frequently, though the chips may be a crap shoot as to whether or not they're any good. But it's rare you get peas with it, which is sad.

We finally had a winery open in town, which is really a restaurant/bar that sells wine. Their wine production is elsewhere in the state. But their food is quite good. Their F&C is with some form of garlic aioli instead of tartar sauce, and shoestring french fries instead of thicker chips like in your photo. But when I had it a few weeks ago, it was quite good.

They have a very good dessert wine called Kiva, I brought a bottle down to Phoenix for my sister. She's worked her butt off for my parent's with their medical needs and really deserves it and a lot more.

Pubs here will serve peas in one of three different versions: fresh garden peas (as in my photo), mushy peas or pea pourée, usually a mix with onion. I prefer the whole peas.

Yeah, definitely whole. I can conceive an application for puree, I'm not sure what off-hand, but I'm sure there is a culinary application. And I've always wanted to try mushy peas.

I make an excellent pasta carbonarra, and I add peas to it. The sweetness of the peas is a very nice compliment to the saltiness of the cheese and bacon.
