It's talismanic, somehow: how did the US flag become a symbol of resistance rather than--or in addition to--patriotism? Isn't it just that it's enshrined in our national anthem that way? After all, what else is the anthem about? After a night of disaster, the flag was still there -- and that is, somehow, inspiring. I can see people adapting that for "survival from a natural disaster" as well as "survival from enemy bombardment ( ... )

Flag: I see the raising of the flag not as resistance, but rather affirmation. That these people are survivors, like-or even due- to their American heritage... You are right it is rather interesting personal investiture of nationalism... sort of narcissistic even... "as we stand, so stands America" interesting...

And regarding honesty and still quoting Jubal Early "I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well though, I have a mighty roar"
