Isn't it just that it's enshrined in our national anthem that way? After all, what else is the anthem about? After a night of disaster, the flag was still there -- and that is, somehow, inspiring. I can see people adapting that for "survival from a natural disaster" as well as "survival from enemy bombardment".

I keep hearing from multiple sources that my Mom's house survived with no damage. (Yay, municipal decisions to start building up dunes starting about 30 years ago.) I don't want to quite count on it until she's back in it, but oh god, I know how lucky we are if it's true. (One of her best friends was in a low-lying part of the island; I sat in that woman's living room less than 2 weeks ago; now it's all gone, and she'll be homeless for at least 6 months, or who knows how long.)
