By way of BoingBoing:
Photographs of New York after the storm. One of the things I find interesting from an anthropological perspective is the use of the American flag in some of these photos. It's talismanic, somehow: how did the US flag become a symbol of resistance rather than--or in addition to--patriotism?
I mean, I understand the use of the flag after 9/11; but it's not as though Sandy was an enemy force.
There is suprisingly no overlap in these two other sets of photographs of the aftermath of Sandy in the New York/New Jersey region:
One,
Two.
Why is it that
professional football players are more committed to intellectual honesty, and more articulate in their passion, than any of our politicians? To quote Joss Whedon (by way of Jubal Early), "That seem right to you?"
Hey, remember that federal agency biologist who was accused of falsifying data about drowning polar bears?
He's been vindicated, although none of his research proposals are being approved. I have seen mostly positive reviews of the new Bond film; it was a surprise to see
Abigail Nussbaum point out some significant problems with Skyfall. Some things unrelated less related to politics:
A visit to the polar bear capital of the world. The photos are kind of great.
A fabulous illustrated Don Quixote.
A band in the UK performed "Once More With Feeling" live onstage. If I could stream video at work, I would totally be watching that right now. Instead, I think I shall pull up the soundtrack on my iPod...
Jim Smith over at MGK offers up
a complicated plot for a Doctor Who/Quantum Leap crossover. I would totally read that!
The Dallas Observer has
a long piece on the life and death of the most recent white buffalo.
David R. Montgomery, in the pages of the Geological Society of America,
summarizes the intellectual history of modern creationism. And yet, the geological case for a global flood that creationists offer as an alternative to evolution was discredited before Darwin set foot aboard The Beagle.
Contrarian/counter-intuitive headlines in The Atlantic. Heh, I say. Heh.
Noted for later reading:
A long story about a conman.
A long piece about a conservative evangelist. *
This apple cake recipe looks pretty similar to the one I usually make, although I use Granny Smith apples and don't peel them. But the suggestion of Five Spice Powder is intriguing, I shall have to investigate that. And with that much oil and sugar it shouldn't need frosting, to my mind. Hmm, maybe I should bake a cake tomorrow night, to keep me occupied while the results come in. (One of the advantages of living on the west coast is that usually I get to know the nationwide election results before I go to bed--2000 was, of course, the exception.)
I might do
this winter fruit pie for Thanksgiving: I like the combination of fruits and it would be nice to change up the rotation.
