BBC's 'Ancient Worlds' you lied to me. Last night I settled down for what promised to be an hour long programme on Alexander the Great and within twenty minutes you had gone through his entire history (badly, I might add) and moved on to his successors. His successors are not him. This is easily recognisable by the fact that the period after ( Read more... )

Congratulations! What are you doing it in? (And it's totally worthwhile, says I, particularly when it's your obsession. That just makes it even more fun!)

That is kind of insanely awesome and brilliant. I hope you're going to rant and rave about it on your LJ so I can be green with envy at such a fantastic-sounding degree! Pah, my knowledge is teeny compared to so many people I know. All I do is flail around and get excited by Alexander history random stuff. XD

IKR?? Dammit,I was looking forward to a whole hour of Alexander, what a fail, BBC. Talk about skim over a shit ton of stuff as well.

Ooh,I'll be interested to read the reviews of these books :) If I had the money I'd totally end up spending that much, too. I did buy Arrian off Amazon, and two other things which ended up not arriving and now I've having to get refunds and open cases on people *grumble* (Memoirs of Hadrian & this little pendant of Alexander.)

OMG yes! It was all 'Alexander was born, then shit happened, then he died. LET'S TALK ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE INSTEAD!' Arrgh. And I got really annoyed when he kept going on about how Alexander didn't have the skills to empire build because he didn't cement his position etc. etc. I was sitting there going 'Uh, premature death? Hello? Maybe he would have if he'd, you know, not DIED?!' *Grumble*

Oh, Arrian is my first love because it was the first Alexander book I picked up ever. It's quite a tedious read to start, but it does get a lot better. I'm sorry you ended up ordering from such bad sellers though. That sucks. :(

LOL exactly! Him being dead might have had something to do with it. He skimmed over both sides of it so much I didn't really learn anything from either xD Do an hour of Alexander and an hour of what happened afterward, don't muddle it all together and ultimately tell us bugger all.

I'm sure he enjoyed diving and walking around smugly in his hipster scarf carrying a copy of The Illiad though :P

Yeah, I seem to working my way back from Renault to the actual sources now haha.
Argh,I got a refund back from one seller, but the person I ordered the pendant from hasn't replied for about 3 weeks now and I've opened a case. Which is annoying cos they have really good feedback and seem to be a good seller...hmmm...

I notice they changed the programme summary and title for the re-run. Maybe a second opinion was needed to work out it wasn't about Alexander?! Absolutely. You cannot cover Alexander and the Successors all in an hour. It just cannot be done properly. What worries me is people who watched that programme with no previous knowledge may have been completely confused and misled by it all. And you're right, it really told us nothing ( ... )
