If someone doesn't want to work weekends because the social life is more important than the money, then they likely aren't going to be any good. That individual obviously has some growing up to do if mommy is fighting battles. What kind of mom does that? She should be saying, "You'd have an easier time getting a job if you'd work the goddamn weekends when they need you".

I do a fair amount of seasonal/contractual work and I usually get in touch at least a month, if not two before anything is expected to take place because these things have to be planned and scheduled. Even then, I might not get a lot of work because they tend to prioritize their regular staff over independent contractors. Still, I wouldn't call up complaining because it's so not worth burning the bridge. If she'd just come in and chatted, she might have gotten something.
Also, if I was told someone might have hours for me, I wouldn't turn down jobs that guaranteed hours. Kid dug her own hole there (if those jobs were real).
