I've been saving change for several months, now. Rather than deal out exact change when buying something, I always round up to the next dollar and the put the change away. I took it to the CoinStar machine and I had almost $50! Of course, they charge you a fee of 8.9% if you cash it out, but the fee is waived if you transfer it to a gift card. ( Read more... )

Instead of taking your change to a coinstar machine, why not take it to your bank? Mine has a coin-counting machine that they let me use for free. I go there about once a year with a big bag of coins and deposit the money in my checking account.

My old bank requires you to count/wrap the coins yourself and write your account number on each tube. They sucked for some other reasons so I ended up ditching them.

Now I bank with a credit union, and they don't have any physical locations (at least not in my area). They do refund ATM fees and allow you to deposit checks over the internet (with a scanner) so I don't really miss having a bank to visit.
