The View From Afar, Part 2

Aug 08, 2006 23:05

I was gonna get this out sooner, but other stories got in the way. But it is here now and I'm pretty sure I'm going to wrap it up with the next one. If not, it's only going to take two more... I hope anyway. I, of course, make no promises.

Part 2:

“You’re such a liar, you know that. Acting like you didn’t want to go to Atlantis and the second that Landry offers it, you jump on it.” Laura says shaking her head.

Lorne bows his head a little because it’s true and he knows it. He even talked his team into going. Laura had jumped on the bandwagon no problem and so had Dr. Lindsey. And so they had hopped aboard the Daedelus, Lorne catching as many glimpses of Rodney as he possibly could while Laura continued to rag on him.

She had the decency to only do it when they were alone, never in front of the Marines or other officers because she was smarter than that, but she ragged on him nonetheless. Lorne was grateful though. She never once told him to shut up and she always had chocolate on hand for when he got really mopey about it.

“God, remember when we first got here. Your first mission involved trailing him around all day. He was so bitchy to you and you still wanted him. You’re one sick puppy you know that.” Laura says.

“Okay, can you not. Geez…”

“Well it worked out for the best. You know, after a few bumps in the road that is.”

“You have to stop looking at him.” Laura hissed at him.

“Who says I’m looking at him?” Lorne asked.

Laura rolled her eyes as she stuffed a bite of spaghetti in her mouth.

“Please don’t lie to me. You’re really bad at it.”

“Okay so I’m looking at him. He’s talking to Katie Brown again.” Lorne said.

He took a bite of his sandwich, eyes trained on Rodney who’s sitting with his team as he happily munches on his sandwich. Katie Brown was sitting, very close Lorne noted, and she was trying to talk to him. She looked very interested in whatever he was saying, although she also looked disgusted as Rodney talked with his mouth full.

“I really wish you wouldn’t do this to yourself.” Laura said her voice filled with concern.

“Do what?” Lorne asked, but his eyes weren’t on her.

They were on Rodney and Katie Brown. Rodney who smiled nervously at Katie as she inched closer to him. Watched as Katie coyly smiled at Rodney, her finger trailing up Rodney’s forearm and Rodney’s face looking a bit shocked and in awe. Watched as Rodney half choked on his food before saying something that Lorne couldn’t hear over the noisy mess hall.

And Lorne watched as Katie gave him another soft smile and moved away from the table. Lorne had the irrational urge to strangle her.

“This. This whole getting jealous about a girl dating a guy you’re not even with. It’s a little stalker like.” Laura said.

“I… can’t help it.”

“You know he’s going on a date with her.”

“Yes, you told me, girl’s poker night.”

“So… get over it already. Especially since we have to piggyback with them today.” Laura said.

“It’s not going to be a problem.”

“It is if you’re all moony eyes over him. This is seriously pathetic you do realize that right.”

“Oh and I guess your way of getting a guy is so much better right. Throw yourself at him and hope he doesn’t drop you.”

“Hey you don’t have to be an ass. I was just trying to help.” Laura said in an offended tone.

“Yeah, well I didn’t ask for your help.” Lorne said hotly.

“Fine.” She said slamming her fist on the table as she grabbed her tray and walked away.

Lorne felt like a complete idiot. The last thing he’d done with Laura that day was argue and now she was stuck inside McKay’s head. He hadn’t meant anything he said. He was just irrationally angry and jealous because Rodney had a date with a girl and Lorne wanted to have a date with Rodney.

He had of course heard how the date went. Only two hours had gone by and everyone in Atlantis not only knew that there was a very distinct possibility that Rodney and Laura were going to die because Zelenka wasn’t any closer to figure out how to fix it. But apparently the big gossip was that Rodney McKay had put the moves on Katie Brown.

Lorne didn’t know how he felt about that. He was too worried about Laura and making sure everything turned out for the best than his own stupid love life or lack thereof. He was so worried in fact that he was just wondering the halls, head down as he tried to think about anything else than his best friend dying and the last thing he had said to her.

He didn’t even see Rodney walking down the same hallway looking like he was arguing with himself. Didn’t see him until he bumped right into him, knocking him right down to the ground.

“As if my day wasn’t already hell.” Rodney muttered.

“I’m so sorry, Dr. McKay.”

“It’s fine, Major. Just one thing in the long list of things that make the last two days absolute hell.” Rodney said as he tried to get up.

Lorne helped him up and watched as Rodney brushed off his clothes.

“Still. I wasn’t watching where I was going. Lot on my mind.” Lorne said.

“Hmmm… and yet I don’t think it’s nearly as much as I have on mind.” Rodney said.

“Oh, yeah, right. Um… how is… Lieutenant Cadman?”

Rodney looked at him weirdly and was silent for a few seconds, grimace taking over his face.

“Look, just because I’m sharing a body with you doesn’t mean I want to be involved in your couple issues.” Rodney said.

“What?” Lorne asked.

“She’s calling you a whole bunch of names. Asshole being the one she prefers the most. I’m assuming the two of you had a fight.”

“Yeah, but it’s not how you think. Me and Laura… we’re just friends. She’s like my little sister, if anything.” Lorne said.

He watched as Rodney’s eyes went a little wide and he frowned.

“Oh, well, that’s… one rumor dispelled.” Rodney said.

“Yeah, um, just… I guess I want her… I mean if you don’t mind…”

“Go ahead.” Rodney said waving his hand in the air.

“Just make it fast. We have to go see Heightmeyer.”

“Oh, well, Laura… I’m taking your advice. I’m… getting over it.”

Rodney stared at him in confusion for a couple of seconds and Lorne knew he probably sounded like a crazy person. He let it go though because he wasn’t sure if Laura was going to make it out of this and he wasn’t going to let this chance slip.

“And I’m sorry… for… you know. It’s not like me to act like that and… you’re right.”

“She’s not going to die, you know.” Rodney said.

“I just had to tell her.”

“I’m not sure you told her anything, but then again… it’s not my place is it.”

Lorne smiled at him and Rodney half smiled back at him.

“But don’t worry. I have full confidence that this will all get figured out. So… you know… no good byes yet.” Rodney said with a smile.

Lorne smiled back and started walking the other way.

Lorne sat in his room in plain clothes as he waited for the chime at the door. He was nervous and the way his hands shook showed that. He wasn’t exactly sure he was doing the right thing, but at least he was doing something.

When the door chimed, he got up to answer it wiping his sweaty palms on his khaki pants before he answered.

“Laura.” Lorne said slightly shocked.

She smiled widely at him and barged inside his quarters.

“Hi Mister Can’t Come and See Your Best Friend in the Infirmary. You know it would have been nice of you to show up when they or… well… Rodney figured it out. But I suppose that can be attributed to your whole moving on thing.” Laura said as she flopped down on his bed.

“Something like that. Also, I wasn’t sure if you wanted to talk to me.” Lorne said rubbing his neck uneasily.

“Oh drop the ‘aw shucks’ routine. I’m immune. Anyone, cancel the whole moving on thing. I was wrong.”

“What?”

“I was wrong. Mark… he likes you.”

“What?”

Laura glared at him.

“Get with the program. Rodney likes you.”

“Laura.”

“I know it. I was inside the guy’s head for two days.”

“I thought you couldn’t read his thoughts.”

“I couldn’t, but when you ran into him in the hall and did your little impromptu apology, I could sense that he likes you.”

“Laura, he probably doesn’t even remember me.”

“Well, I don’t know for sure if he does or not, but come on Mark, this is what you’ve always wanted. There’s definite attraction there.” Laura said.

Lorne wanted to believe her. She would know better than anyone really, but Lorne had set his mind to the whole moving on thing and he wasn’t about to abandon ship just because of new evidence.

No matter how much it made him feel like a thirteen year old girl to hear that Rodney might like him back.

“It’s too late now.”

“What?” Laura said with a frown.

“Look, you said move on, so… I’m going to try that out.” Lorne said as he straightened out his shirt.

Laura eyed him critically before he mouth went wide and her eyes narrowed.

“You have a date.” She said accusingly.

“Yes, I do.”

“But… but…”

“And I’m going on it.”

“I said I was wrong.”

“Laura, as much as I love and appreciate you… the world and my decisions don’t revolve around you. I’ve been in this ugly infatuated mood for over a year. That’s insane. Especially now that we’re in an alien galaxy with aliens that want to literally suck the life out of us.” Lorne said.

“You’re making a mistake. You’re settling.”

“I’m trying new things.”

“Don’t you think you’re moving a little fast? I mean we didn’t even get to do the chocolate grieve thing.”

Lorne shook his head and sighed.

“This has been a long time coming.”
