So I was originally going to write something different for the Sight prompt with
wordclaim50, it was always going to be Danny/Martin, but I was going to do it from Sylvia's POV. I got halfway through it and realized it was all bad. So I started it all over again. And now I know that it works for the
new_wat_order challenge. So all is well that ends well I supposed.

Martin is extremely nervous.
He’s not sure why. It’s just a picture. And it’s not like the office doesn’t know about him and Danny. But still, it’s a picture and it’s on his desk and there’s no denying that he and Danny are a couple the second he puts it, in a nice, sensible, wood frame, on his desk.
The moment the picture was taken, he knew he was going to want a copy. It was taken at Danny’s nephew’s, Nicky, tenth birthday. Martin remembers how much of a nervous wreck Danny had been before what with his tenuous relationship with Raffi. Martin hadn’t planned on going, they’d only been dating for a few weeks at the time.
But one look at Danny’s helpless face, combined with a well timed pout, and Martin was agreeing to go. He’d planned on spending the day in sweats and an old college shirt, but he figured he could throw on a nice shirt and a pair of jeans. And Danny had looked great as well.
“Wow, you guys look really good together.”
Martin looks over his shoulder to see Sam smiling somewhat sadly at the picture in front of him. Martin puts on a smile of his own and turns to face her. Things with Sam were over before he and Danny started dating. Martin wasn’t cruel enough to cheat on her with Danny nor would he ever be.
And it wasn’t like things with him and Sam were going anywhere. Martin suspects that she’s just upset at having failed at another attempt at a relationship rather than the fact that that failed relationship just happened to be with him.
Danny likes to think it’s because Martin’s so cute.
Martin likes to roll his eyes when Danny says that.
“Thanks.”
“Never seen that picture before. When was it taken.”
Martin smiles because he remembers when it was taken. Remembers how nervous Danny was driving over to Sylvia and Raffi’s apartment because just a few weeks earlier Raffi was on the verge of losing it all and Danny swore to try and be there for him, but sometimes the job made it impossible.
Remembers how Danny held the big box wrapped in fire truck wrapping paper because Sylvia mentioned that Nicky wants to be a fireman when he grew up, like it was a shield. Remembers how Danny spent all that time trying to wrap it before letting out a frustrated sigh and throwing the paper on the floor. Remembers how he took the paper and the present and wrapped it himself before telling Danny it was time to go to bed.
“It was taken at Danny’s nephew’s birthday party.” Martin answers.
“Wow, meeting the family. That’s a big step.” Sam says and Martin can hear the regret in her voice he thought should have faded a long time ago.
Although Martin’s not really sure if it’s regret or envy because Martin has something that she wants and she’s not sure how to deal with that.
“I guess. I sort of met them before. At least his brother.” Martin says.
Because he did met Raffi and even though it wasn’t on the best of circumstances and he and Danny certainly weren’t dating at the time, Raffi had seemed nice enough. Genuinely sad about the worry he’d caused and how messed up he let his life get and Martin had stayed with him when Danny had gone to pick up Sylvia and Nicky to see him in the hospital.
Danny got it so no charges were brought up, clout of an FBI officer, Martin supposes. He made Raffi go to a rehab center and get himself clean and made promises that he, up until the party, hadn’t done so well in keeping. So the party was a big deal and Danny made it a point to get the best present he could possible get and show up ten minutes early.
He’d walked to the park, Martin trailing behind him, with his present in hand and Martin was surprised that Danny kept a hold on it with the way he’d been shaking before. They’d made it to the picnic benches, streamers and balloons decorating the picnic area and Raffi and Sylvia putting the last touches on everything before all the guests showed up.
And Martin remembers think it was kind of endearing because Danny’s usually this charming, smooth guy who knows just what to say and when to say it and Martin’s usually the one who blushes and sticks his foot in his mouth. It’s humanizing to see Danny away from the job and feeling uneasy like that because there have been times, when they’re out on dates and stuff, where Martin feels a little weird standing or sitting next to Danny.
Danny smiled shyly as he alerted them to their presence and both smiled brightly at him, Raffi taking the present in his hands and giving Danny a hug before moving on to put the present down. Sylvia did the same, though her hug was somewhat curtailed by the fact that she was pretty pregnant.
“Right, I forgot about that. Just didn’t know that you and Danny were meet the family serious.”
“I hadn’t either.” Martin says with a smile.
Martin remembers being introduced to Sylvia and Raffi, Sylvia pulling him into a hug and Raffi shaking his hand and whispering his thanks for that night that Martin waited with him in the hospital. He remembers Sylvia pulling Danny to the side when the party was in full swing. Remembers Danny coming back with a great big smile on his face before he kissed Martin on the cheek and pulled him over to where the kids were playing on the playground to act like a goof ball.
And he remembers when the picture was taken, Sylvia pleading for a picture of the two of them because according to her, they were too cut together. He remembers Danny’s arm wrapping around Martin’s waist, Martin’s hand going up to Danny’s shoulder. He was looking at the camera up until the point where Raffi told a joke and Martin had to laugh at it and his head turned just when Sylvia took the picture.
“You know… you look really good together.” Sam says again, her head tilted slightly, lips pursed in concentration.
“You said that. Also, you’ve known about me and Danny for awhile now.”
“I know. I guess I’ve just never seen the two of you so… couple like. Just… new perspective I guess.”
Martin smiles at that because he had his doubts too. Couldn’t see how this thing with Danny would ever work out, but it’s turning out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Martin guesses unexpected things are usually like that.
It took a lot of courage to go to Sylvia and Raffi’s apartment. He hadn’t told Sylvia that he had wanted a copy, but somehow he knew that it was a good picture, that there was something about it that was worth keeping hold of. So he sucked it up and got it.
“It’s a very good picture. I almost don’t want to give it to you.” Sylvia said with a smile.
Martin smiled back, wringing his hands nervously because it is Sylvia’s picture and maybe it’s a little unfair that he’s asking for it.
“I could make a copy. Bring you back the original.” Martin said.
“Keep it, Martin. I mean if it means that much to you. I’m sure there will be plenty more picture opportunities in the future.” She said with another smile.
Martin smiled back.
It struck Martin how confident she was that Martin and Danny would be Martin and Danny long enough to have more picture opportunities, but he just smiled at Sylvia and thanked her for the picture.
Martin had kept it for a few weeks before attempting to find a frame and take it into the office. He had it in the desk at his apartment and he’d look at it sometimes because it really was a nice picture and he and Danny just looked so happy that it made Martin feel all warm inside to look at it.
He’d made copies and gave one to Sylvia who just smiled at him and hugged him. He carried one in his wallet and when he’d buy groceries the check out clerk would always comment on how happy he looked with his boyfriend.
And on nights when they staggered into Martin’s apartment after a long day, Martin had liked to look at it after Danny had fallen asleep. Martin finds it comforting to know that he’s got a relationship that’s strong enough to be seen in a simple photograph.
“Well, we’ve kind of kept it an open secret.”
Sam nods and gives Martin a half smile.
“I guess there’s just knowing and then there’s… knowing.” She says.
They stare at each other for a second before Danny passes by, two coffees in hand and he hands it to Martin with a smile.
“Three creams and four sugars, just the way you like it.” Danny says.
“Thanks.” Martin says.
“Hey Danny. We were just admiring this nice pictures Martin has on his desk.” Sam says.
Martin blushes a little and Danny leans over him to see the picture, sitting on Martin’s desk for all to see in it’s wood frame and he smiles.
“Nicky’s birthday party. I remember that. Didn’t know Sylvia gave you a copy though.” Danny says.
“It’s a great picture.” Sam says.
“I do look great in it, if I do say so myself.” Danny says with a smirk on his face.
Sam rolls her eyes.
“Well Martin certainly does look cute.” Sam says.
“You better watch what you say, Spade.” Danny says and he throws his arm around Martin’s shoulders.
Sam rolls her eyes again and flicks her hand at Danny.
“That shipped sailed a long time ago. He looks hotter with you anyway. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some work to do. You know that thing they pay you to do.” Sam says as she walks off.
“You think she got the picture. Maybe you need to mark your territory just in case.” Martin says in a dry voice.
“Can I help it if your ex just happens to work with us and I just happen to get a little jealous.”
“I’m sure you could if you tried.”
“Obviously you underestimate how attractive you are and how determined some people can be.”
“I don’t think Sam is one of those people.”
“Hmm… you’re probably right. She thought we looked hot together. Which is totally true.”
Martin smiles at that because they’re definitely something together.
“You think?”
“Come on, anyone with eyes can see it.”
“Maybe.”
“So, do have a copy?”
“Why you want one?” Martin asks.
“Well, yeah, it’s not fair that you get one and I don’t. So, do you have another one?”
Martin smiles and turns in Danny’s arms and hugs him. It’s not exactly the most appropriate place to have a public display of affection, but Martin can’t help kissing Danny just a little bit.
“Yeah, I think I might have one or two extras.”
