I just can't have nice things

Well, I was already planning to post a big long thing about my exceedingly busy weekend, but then events just had to progress in such a way as to monopolize my attention on one particular news item.

So, Saturday was the planned date to help Carlos move out of his Culver City apartment, now that Erin has left for grad school. So, about 9:30 or so I got into the car and made my way out of my building complex.

I nose my car just far enough out of the driveway to be able to see around the parked cars on the street. I stop. I look left: clear. I look right...

BIG-ASS HUGE FREAKING SUV backing up, steadily and unabatedly, right at me.

I panicked a little bit, and managed not to find the horn until AFTER she had crashed into my car. This big-ass SUV was big enough so that its bumper was completely above mine, putting it at prime location to collide with my headlight.

The very first words out of her mouth as she got out of her big-ass SUV were "I didn't even see you, you're so damn tiny." Thank you for that, miss SUV-driver. I was certain to let the insurance company know those were the first words you said. At no time did she ask if I was "okay." I am, by the way, at least so far as physical effects from the accident are concerned.

  1. right front fender bent, cracked, and smashed. Will have to be completely replaced.
  2. Radiator mounting frame bent. Can almost certainly be bent back into shape.
  3. Hood bent. It's one of the three metal body panels on this car, so it might be able to be bent back into shape.
  4. Headlight works, as does the turn signal, but the reflectors behind the bulbs cracked and the turn signal bulb now hangs loose. Also, the mounts holding the headlight assembly in place broke, so the whole assembly will have to be replaced.
  5. Bumper was pretty much untouched (due to the relative heights), but there's some scratched paint that can probably be covered by bondo and repainted.
As most of you know, this is not the first time I've had car problems. Fortunately, this time, my insurance (or hers, since I'm CLEARLY not at fault this time) will cover all of it, less my deductible. And, Geico will be tracking down her insurance provider to see about covering my deductible as well, though that will probably be several months in coming.Anywho... yeah... busy weekend. I might around to posting about the rest of it later today or tomorrow. As it is, I'm sore, but that's due to heavy lifting while helping Carlos and headbanging at the party last night. Ever muscle in my neck is screaming at me today.
