I guess I have a much broader view of art. To me, art is expressing yourself in a creative manner in whatever form that takes.
I think there is an art to teaching, artistry in dancing, heck even art in cleaning when you make squiggly designs with the windex to make the job more fun. ;)
From a more traditional standpoint though, these are the things I do or have done(in no particular order): photography colored pencil drawings oil painting digital banners/icons/images writing scrapbooking card making natural seasonal wreaths and swags needlepoint coasters write lyrics create dance moves make a king sized quilt (with huge help from a friend) crochet embroider create music plus assorted other arts and crafts type projects
I don't like the narrow definition of art, but when I apply the question "are you an artist" or "do you make art" to myself, that's where my brain goes. It says "no" because none of the creative things I do match that narrow definition, even though I consider them artistic and definitely creative. I have no problems saying I'm creative.
I suppose its another self-image type thing that's subconscious for the most part. It's easier to say someone else is an artist or making art by doing things that don't fit the narrow definition, but I can't seem to convince myself to apply it to me.
Have you read The Subversive Stitch? It's a whole book about the difference between "art" and "craft", using the history of embroidery to make her argument.
Ha! Ive done that one! Finished several years ago. I like to stitch while watching DVDs so I always had something going. Now that I've gotten rid of the TV I don't stitch and miss it a lot
( ... )
Art is so subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and all that.
Off the cuff I guess I'd say that to me, art is something that requires skill, practice, creativity and focus, and it yeilds something that someone, somewhere finds aesthetically pleasing in some way.
My artistic endeavours are music (bells and singing), photo collages, and Ukrainian eggs.
I find it funny that we have a society that assumes people spend tons of money on tv's, sound systems, mp3 players and other devices for reproducing dramatic and musical performances and even poetry recitations (what else is rap?) to the point of making it a large sector of the economy and what one *does* with the disposable income they have, yet there is some sort of contempt for the arts as not real work, or a part of the economy. Art is content The fancy-pants consumer electronics that have taken over the word "Technology" in recent years could be just as well replaced with rocks of varying sizes if not for the arts.
That's a very good point, and also a sad comment on society, I think. The thought behind the post came out of a variety of other people posting things on facebook (mostly) about the value of the arts to society. Considering how much we (as a society) spend on entertainment, you'd think we'd be willing to invest more in the people and process of producing arts of all sorts!

I think your area of creativity is in decorating yourself! You color your hair, get fantastic tattoos, make yourself bright garments.
