Wow, talk about misrepresentation

A friend of mine saw a documentary on Discovery called Gamer Generation, which had a little bit of CoH in it. Unfortunately, what little it had pretty much grossly misrepresented the game, even getting facts such as the level cap wrong (they say it's 60). You only need to watch the first 3 minutes or so to get all the CoH bits ( Read more... )

Makes me wish I could get a hold of whoever did the documentary and drag them off to one of the Meet 'n Greets, and then have them sit in on a week's worth of gaming with folks.
They need to re-shoot the docu with more up to date information (shot in 2007!) because things are not only very different now compared to then but also because they seriously need to get their information about the game in general straight.

[And is it just me, or did it look like she was running a defender or a controller? Solo? (and against Crey... man, Crey are evil in general to go against, let alone going solo on a Def or Troller...) ]

My Troller solos Crey all the time, no problem.

My mind/rad troller was rather lacking in DPS, so soloing could be painful because it was slow, but all my trollers had enough control that soloing didn't court much debt.

Yeah, I definitely get the feeling they didn't do much research at all, and the COH players they interviewed in that documentary didn't seem much like most of the folks I play with. For me (and most of them), it's about the journey, not the destination! Until recently, there wasn't much you could do once you hit the level cap. Now there's a lot more interesting end-game content but what's the point of letting someone else have the fun of earning and playing with your new powers? I'd rather have the fun of playing with friends and giggling with glee when I get some awesome new power!

Funny you should mention that, 'cause I was literally giggling with glee after my fire/fire brute picked up Burn last night! I haven't had this much fun with a toon in ages.

That's pretty much how I play! Get the new shiny power, cackle with glee, enjoy the journey and the stories! :D I'm not in a huge hurry to get to 50, either.

These sorts of documentaries always seem to focus on the most oddball and dysfunctional people in the given group. The goal must be to sensationalize as much as possible for ratings (or maybe for the lulz). I see this done to gamers, furries, SCA people, Star Trek fans... whatever group at the moment seems fun to point at and go, "hah-ha!"

It doesn't help that Video Games are the latest victim for society's need for Moral Panic

Like I said on the video comments, how does it take them ten days to get from level 30 to level 40, especially playing 24 hours a day? They are terrible at their jobs. Even way way back before any of the XP smoothing, I could still get one level (or two or three) a night in just a couple hours' play, and I don't power game.

They are terrible at powerleveling.

Maybe they're like auto mechanics and they artificially inflate the time it takes to do something so that they can pad their income. Or, possibly they're spending a lot of that time gold-farming.

Or, maybe they just are bad at their jobs.
