I watched the film in high school when it first came out and hated it but I suspect that was because what Coppola was doing went entirely over my head...

Her mother, who had 15 children BEFORE having Marie, sent letter after letter advising her on how to be "open and alluring" to her husband and didn't know that seduction from a beautiful woman wasn't enough...The future King had "problems". Her eldest brother (later the benefactor back in Austria to Mozart who met Marie briefly as children) had to come all the way to France and have a private "talk" with Louis XVI, mano a mano about what to do and how to make an heir. As in 'when -it- goes up, my little sister has a hole, to place it, like a key in a lock (The dauphin built locks and keys as a hobby) so next time you are in bed together and -it- gets big, caress my sister and she will place your key in her lock to make a baby for France ( ... )

I LOVE this movie. Bought the soundtrack immediately and eventually the DVD. I'm ten years younger than you, but this movie gave me an appreciation for 80s music and the mindset that went with it.

It's just like S.C.'s film 'The Virgin Suicides" is a decade before MY TIME yet put me in a place and time. I plan on reviewing that masterpiece soon. I have seen it as often as "M.A." (6 or 7 times?) and with both I always see something new and different, always peeling back yet another layer. Yet the reason I want to wait on doing "Virgin Suicides" is this here Library Hound is about to get it anytime this month and I would like to compare book and film. I am curious what was already magic and what Sofia added ( ... )

I just think women like Sofia, Marie, and Anne (Boleyn) need to be seen for what they gave, sacrificed and their talent recognized ( ... )
