I love this movie so much! When I saw it in the theatre, I wanted to stand up and cheer.
I'm a major history & costuming nerd, so this movie was heavenly to me. I was bummed by some of the lackluster reviews it received, I thought it was great and well worth re-watching.
Thanks for the review! :D I used to have an icon from the movie but my extra icons are expired!
Well of COURSE I was going to leave a comment on this one.
I'll be honest; I personally wasn't a fan of the soundtrack. I like your take on it and I think its clever in that regard, but as a hardcore period piece fan, I think I felt disoriented by the modern sound.
As for the movie itself, I adored the costumes and am so jealous that they got to film in Versailles (The one time I had a chance to visit it in 2005, the Hall of Mirrors was under restoration; I sometimes wonder if they were touching it up in preparation for filming this movie). Story-wise...I was a little disappointed that they took the rich story of Antonia Fraser's biography and distilled it so much. Again, I see what Coppola was getting at, but there was so much more that could have been told, even if you wanted to leave out her decline and fall.
Just my two cents, of course, and I am glad to have seen it if only for the visuals. But try as I might, I can't love it as much as I'd like to.
It wasn't a great time to be in France, to be honest. The Eiffel Tower's elevators were broken, everything was on strike (including St. Chappelle, the one church I was really dying to see) and it was blazing hot until the second day, when there was a deluge. I promised myself someday I'd go back and do it right.
