I'm currently reading Alan Hollinghurst's The Swimming-Pool Library for a book club, and I'm finding it hard going. It's not the writing style; he had me when he used "clangorous" halfway down the first page. It's not the gay sex either, I've read far more explicit in fanfiction. I seem to have dropped off LJ for a while. The nice men who fixed my aging roof-tiles last month are back and crawling around on the inside now, treating the roof beams and putting more insulation in. This has occasioned working from home, which has had pluses and minuses. On the plus side, it did prod me into hooking up the second monitor I've had for ages. Dentures repaired, work restarted. Oh, and I found a major bug in my telemetry library whereby one thing was enumerating months from zero, and the other from one. This is only really visible at the ends of some months and all through January, so it's just as well I tried now ( Read more... ) -

Back home briefly between seasonal travels. With typical timing, my dentures broke on Christmas Eve leaving me with no time to get them repaired before the holidays. Fortunately they will hang together most of the time, so I just have to be careful biting into things. I'll have to wait until Monday before I can take them to the dental technician ( Read more... ) -
Fiction: Normal Is Overrated
So instead of writing the long fic that I've been working on all year, I seem to have come up with this since I got my new laptop. I blame Diane Castle; I commented that her non-magical AU for Harry Potter sounded a lot like Alex Rider beefed up to seven years, and that started me thinking. At Novacon, where la_marquise_de is the well-deserved guest of honour. I haven't been for years, not since I stopped doing a fanzine of my own, and I'm enjoying myself thoroughly. Why did I stop coming again?

I'm starting to get the hang of roasting stuff. My beef came out underdone for my tastes (but I'm a heathen, so others would probably be fine with it), and the turnip could have used longer too (but was vastly improved by a bit of cayenne), but everything else worked nicely.
