These are the two timed versions that I'll provide since these were the 2 raws I was able to find, the second one is super heavy but it looks so good. Either way, sorry for any mistakes and hope it helps. I really enjoyed doing this, and endless notes coming in the way.
Okay, I've been so lazy to put the notes here, but here we go, first a couple of points to take in consideration, the actual notes and at last my opinion, which will be biased :P
Points to highlight about this SP
First, I strongly recommend you to watch the dorama, 'cause it's interesting, it's old (I love old doramas) and it's different from others. 'Cause it has cute little Mori
Second, I can't believe that they kept their promise and did reunite after actual 20 years! Just that makes this worthy of a watch for me :D In the last episode Koichi's character, Yamato, says, out of the blue, that they shall meet again after 20 years, and here we are today. (well that day) So, it wasn't out of the blue, I read somewhere that that was the time, the director/scriptwriter, I really don't remember, but the time when he thought the characters would have enough age to be considered adults.
Third, let me enumerate some highlights in this SP
- Kinki Kids acting together, which is amazing! I've only watched one more dorama with both of them, it broke my heart and soul, but their chemistry together is no joke. So, if you enjoy watching them together, this is definitely for you.
- Junba has grown up so fine!, I absolutely love 'model pair', so I had a lot of fun watching them appearing here, actually, they marked their appearances in the initial credits as 'guest appearance', but they were quite involved in the plot and I loved it.
- cute Michi is back!, I didn't think that I would watch something with Michieda Shunsuke so soon after Haha ni naru, but he's back and I liked his part.
- Guests, this has handsome Mukai Osamu and Chiba Yudai, also former Johnny's Junior Kohara Yuki ( "Kohara Yuki was extremely popular back in the day, but retired in order to concentrate on his studies in 2000. Kohara is now an ordinary business man") It's amazing that he came back to acting just for Kinki Kids' anniversary. And last, Hayami Akari, I really liked her character and then I found out about being the girl in other movies I watched before.
Notes on this SP
🍣 This is about the sushi that Tsuyoshi eats, I have no idea on fish or sushi, so it's all brand new for me. The name of the fish is Bigfin reef squid or Aori ika. "As sushi, especially as nigiri, they are simply top-class!" (Source) "Aori ika might just be the tastiest, and most popular of the 100 or so types of ika found in Japan's water. It is usually pricey due to the small quantities found at market." (Source)
🏴 This is about English words, it was really funny because I couldn't recognize at all that what Tsuyoshi was saying was English. He uses the expression アラウンドサーティー (Araundosātī) but the short form アラサー (Arasā), which means 'woman of around thirty'. Also, he later says that if Yuri were alive, she would be a woman of around forty, using this expression アラフォー (Arafō). And this leads me to Tsuyoshi's scene at the convenience store, which I could only guess he says two 'alike' phrases to this rather annoying woman.
🎵 About the translation of the lyrics in the SP, since this was 1000+ lines I didn't want to do it myself, plus I've watched this dorama translated by Eternal Fansubs and decided to use their translations. There are two songs, the theme song: Aisareru yori Aishitai by KinKi Kids and the insert song: "Kaze no nai machi" sang by Tsuyoshi's character in such a beautiful way~ as expected 💓 So, I'll leave here some links.
😞 I wasn't going to write about this, but when Tsuyo's assistant asks him whether he's going to a class reunion (Dōsōkai) he says it's more like a (Doushiyoukai) which sounds really similar and I think it refers to a reunion of fellows to drink? I'm really not sure, so...
🐉 Next, is Koichi referring to himself as having a feeling of being Urashima Taro, "a feeling that everything has changed once one comes back to Japan" (Source)
🐟 This is one of the acids that Yamato mentions, Docosahexaenoic acid "Dietary DHA may reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing the level of blood triglycerides in humans.Below-normal levels of DHA have been associated with Alzheimer's disease. A low level of DHA is also spotted in patients with retinitis pigmentosa ." (So I guess it's good for your health)
😣 This is just one of the words that gave me a headache because of kansai-ben (Osaka dialect), there are many differences, especially the endings. This is a phrase Mori was using when menacing about the bomb. He was faking his accent there and it was so cute, even though his phrase was 「いてまうぞ」(Ite mau zo) which means something like 'I'll send you to the other world' in a very intimidating way. I found this so interesting because the meaning was in a Yahoo question in Japanese, 'cause even if you know Japanese, you may not understand this phrase. (Source)
There are many other examples of kansai-ben which made my poor head ache even more, I think the one using more kansai-ben was Tsuyoshi, he even uses expressions from Nara-ben, the dialect used in his hometown. So...
😀 Last but not least, the end! the end with phrases from old doramas, such as Kindaichi for Tsuyo-pon, I absolutely love his Kindaichi <3. And for Koichi it was from a dorama called Ginrou Kaiki File (also about a high-school detective), this is the last part when he mentions about Nikola Tesla
I think that's all about the notes. There's one more thing, there's this joke going on about Koichi going bald, so it was super funny that the avatar Tsuyo made was completely bald! Plus, Koichi not wanting to play games?! In which universe! that part was so funny XD
An extra point would be all the props used to make references to songs and KK's related things. There were many of them from beginning to end. Here is a list of the answers, because there was this contest in which if you find more than 10 I think it was, you could participate for some price. But fans were able to find much more, like the references to their colors, also the phones for Aiba-chan and Matsujun, and many others. (I may add some of them later on~)
Biased opinion
Well, I really liked working with this, I was going to continue subbing one of Tsuyo-pon's really old doramas, but, I decided to pick this project because the other one is full of kansai-ben, well that was a right choice! But tbh I love listening to Tsuyoshi speaking his Nara-ben, even though in varieties I tend to recognize the Kansai more in Koichi...
It was really fun to see this futari working together again, and of course having their same amazing chemistry, it was actually pretty fun, 'cause I think the dorama was like more dramatic and had many sad parts, but I think this SP was much lighter. I liked the bus scenes and the kids were cute :D
About Aiba-chan and Matsujun, well, to watch Mori being compared to his old self was so wow! And Aiba-chan appearing at the beginning so handsome! I love that hair on him <3
Well, I'm pretty tired, so I'll just stop this endless rambling lol. At the end, my conclusion was the same after watching the dorama, the one who totally stole my heart wasn't the handsome teacher but the fishy lawyer lol, Takeru is my favorite character by far! I loved his stupid excuses for breaking the law and I love his hair.
All I can hope is for Tsuyo's soon recovery 😭
