Chuck and the Family

A discussion on one of the other recent posts has gotten me thinking. Previous seasons were very family friendly and consistent with a 8 Eastern/7 Central time slot.  I never worried about watching Chuck on TV at its regular time with my young children around and in past seasons my oldest child (almost 5 now) sometimes watched with me.  The ( Read more... )

I still let my children watch it, this season and all. Mind, they see it after the fact, but that's only because their bedtimes are 7pm (for the 4 year old) and 7:30pm (for the almost 9 year old), and we're on the east coast so Chuck is an 8pm show ( ... )

Your TV isn't a tracking device. Unless you have a Nielsen meter, no one really knows whether you're watching it live or not.

If you are a Nielsen family, then what you watch does matter, and while Chuck could use support, you have to stand firm in what you believe is best for your family. If you think a more family-friendly show belongs in that time slot, that is what you need to represent in media research.

If the network believes in the show and fears the time slot is to blame, hopefully they'll move the time in response.

Follow your heart.

I'm pretty sure Nielsen also keeps track of DVR'd shows among its households, so even if someone thinks Chuck is too dark for the 8 pm hour, they can still show support if they watch it later on.

I agree with bluepassiflora There were sex and violence in the first two seasons. And yeah, there's a darker tone this season, but I don't consider it of much difference to kids that young that probably can't quite follow it, specially if they are not really watching like you said.
However, if you feel it's not appropriate for them, as their mother (I'm just assuming you're a woman) you know best of course.

My kids stopped watching a while ago, around last season I guess it was when they were in the shower together and Chuck pretty rubbed his face in Sarah's breasts? My oldest is 11 my youngest just turned 1, and I am really particular about what they see, but they used to be able to watch the show with me and my younger brother who is 12. I think it was finally Chuck seeing Sarah kill someone that I thought you know, this isn't a situation that they will ever have to handle, this isn't a sort of stressor I think they should have to think about, because in reality more than likely something like this will not happen to them. So far I don't think I've watched any of this season because I've gotten sick of having to answer the questions again why I won't let them see the show. It's completely inapprioate and not as family friendly as it was the first season. That reason alone I'm disappointed in the show and their writers. They used to be so proud of the fact that it was a show you could sit down and watch with your kids.

Thank you for commenting! There were a few scenes too that made me go "eek" last season, but not as many. I just don't think I can risk the accidental viewing anymore. I'm glad someone else out there feels the same. And despite what others posted I remember people involved in the show describing it as a family show. Robbie McNeil (The exec producer) has been involved with lots of shows that had more family flair as producer, director, and actor.

They won an award for it in their first year if I remember correctly. Zac himself stated he was proud to be part of a show where grandparents, parents and kids can call sit down and watch together. I have two daughters, and I am extremely, extremely careful about over sexualization, especially of Sarah, because basically, she's around to throw herself at the bad guys for them to get their way. Well, even with my sons, I don't like the idea of them thinking that's really how everything words. When in reality that is how it goes, but an 8 year old and a 7 year old don't need to know that. I think that was the hardest part for me when each new season picks up, is how far they've gone from being that family show. Though? In their favor? There's really a lot less blood than on other shows in that genre. That's about it.

Please rememeber to tag your posts in the future!

As for your question: My 8 year old brother sometimes watches the DVDs with me but even in the previous seasons there are things I wouldn't think suitable for young kids, and I'm glad he usually only watches the comedy stuff at the Buy More :)
