Chuck and the Family

A discussion on one of the other recent posts has gotten me thinking. Previous seasons were very family friendly and consistent with a 8 Eastern/7 Central time slot.  I never worried about watching Chuck on TV at its regular time with my young children around and in past seasons my oldest child (almost 5 now) sometimes watched with me.  The ( Read more... )

People aren't being killed on Survivor. Granted there were deaths in prior seasons too, but aside from the one where Chuck saw Sara kill someone it wasn't as disturbing or as frequent. And in general the show is very dark now. Also, they don't usually actually watch the show, but are playing in the room while it is on. Previous seasons most eps were fine if they glanced up and caught a few minutes, but not this one. I'm not talking about older kids here either, all three of mine are under 5.

Not so much family-friendly per se, but similar to a show like Star Trek Voyager where there were plenty of eps without extreme violence - some not so good - but many you could watch it with the kids around. I never sat the kids in front of the TV or anything but they would sometimes stop playing to watch. Even my oldest would only sit still to watch until a commercial break though.

It may be a bit of a darker mood, but I'd think in a good way for watching with kids. Chuck is really having to weigh his decisions in this season, and it seems like all of the characters are trying to figure out what's right and important. It's darker because it's showing that living the sort of lifestyle that Sarah and Casey live has consequences, personal and moral.

I'm not trying to argue with you, clearly you have a better idea what your kids are up for, and I'm just going hypothetically because I'm not a parent. But I was actually thinking about this on Monday night, that it's interesting that they are exploring these issues without being so drastically extreme, not "Hey, guns and explosions and everything are just awesome!" or "Anyone who uses a gun is evil." I can't really think of another TV show that's dealt with the issue this way.

I don't have kids myself so I can't answer your question directly, but I suspect that the ratings drop is mostly due to competition from other networks and DST.

I'm sorry you haven't felt comfortable watching with your children this season, thanks for trying to support it during its original air time despite the extra effort!
