If anyone would like to suggest PalmOS apps that I should try out on the Treo 600... Of course I'm especially interested in the free and open source stuff, but if there's something you consider invaluable (or at least worth the price) please let me know. I've never owned a PDA before, so I am a total n00b in fishing through what's available out ( Read more... )

I don't have a specific app recommendation, but I'd suggest a road map app. quite useful thing to keep you from getting lost

Ben responded in e-mail, but I thought I'd put his recommendations up here as food for thought:

Here are ones that I particularly like and consider essential
  • Happy Days (tracks important events) / free
  • Convert (converts english to metric) / free
  • Automobil / Free
  • Crash Pro 2.16 (manages crashes) / $
  • Keyboard (Editor's Note: he's speaking of the fold-out keyboard accessory)
  • IntelligentFind 3.1 (replaces PDA find) / $

Here are ones I like (many I had to pay for)
I wouldn't consider them absolutely essential but they are nice.
  • Novii Remote (turns your PDA into a universal remote) / $$
  • Metro (subway planner) / $$
  • URL Pro (tracks URLs) / Free
  • Handy Shop (shopping manager) /$
  • Date Essentials (special events) /$
  • Password Manager (manages passwords securely) / $
  • eWallet is also good (similar) /$
  • Print Pro (IR printer) / $
  • iSilo 4.25 (webbrowser) / $
  • Bansai (Project organizer) / $
Finance programs ( ... )

when i used a palm, i considered Metro (subway/metro/train/transit maps for a zillion cities) and Gulliver (travel planning/scheduling/storage/etc) really really really useful. i'm not sure if you travel, but if you do they're great apps. for general knowledge-storing, BrainForest is really really great (tree-based storing of random notes and such). Toast Timer is a very very simple, but really useful timer application, you can set 10 timers to go off in a certain amount of time, set different alarm sounds on each, etc. simple but useful.
