How did you get into slash?

Jul 30, 2009 23:20

Apologies if this topic has already been discussed in the past - I've only managed to work my way through to the Nov 2008 postings so far - real life does insist on getting in the way with things like work and such-like!  I was curious as to how people discovered slash in general, and got into Chuck/Casey slash in particular ( Read more... )

Well ive certainly been through a lot of these phases with many TV programmes, the worst is when you get addicted to a film because when yourve watched it, theres no more. Then you have to resort to fanfiction.
At the moment my two obsessions are Armageddon and The Longest Yard both films (annoyngly) and both star William Fichtner, my latest obession.
So, hell yes, everyone has to get addicted to something sometime, i think its the only thing to keep people sane in this mad world!

Ah yes, I recognise him. What is it that gets you hooked? Is it primarily the actor, so that you hunt out anything he has been in, or is it the character that comes first? I usually get hooked on a particular character (Casey, when it comes to Chuck), but this often leads me to hunt out other work by the same actor. At some point I will hunt out the Firefly DVDs and rewatch them because Baldwin plays Jayne.

yeah, i went through that stage and actually bought the firefly dvds
(i later realised i knew the character of Jayne already cos my friend bought me Serenity, which is the follow up to firefly, on dvd ages ago!)
With Fichtner, i loved his character in Armageddon, Colonel Willie Sharp, and went looking for other characters he played. Im now addicted to most of his films: The Amatures, Black Hawk Down, Albino Alligator etc. But my favs will always be Longest Yard and Armageddon because they were the first ones i discovered.

What causes you to move on? Do you get bored with a particular show, or does the show run out of new material, or does something "better" come along?

Yup. Dr who, Blake's 7 [yes, Kerr Avon; phwoar!], TOS, Quantum Leap, Highlander, Xena, Firefly [ohhh, Jayne..], Stargate:Atlantis [excising the 5th season], Lost [though it's beyond weird] and now Chuck.

Adam had me because of Jayne. Then I managed [slowly] to obtain a fair slice of his back catalogue. A couple at least of his previous roles have given me chills.

Hah, clearly I'm not the only one who fancies bad boys! I used to watch Quantum Leap as well - the character of Al was what attracted me to that. Although it wasn't one of my obsessions - just a show I used to watch. There are relatively few shows that I get *really* obsessive about. Babylon 5 was probably the first, but that only went so far as watching each ep several times. Then B7, more recently Supernatural and Eli Stone. I move on from a show when there are no more new episodes to watch. (So I'll go back to Supernatural when S5 eventually airs.)

What are some of Adam's roles that have given you chills? Me wants to check them out!!

1. Dead Bolt
(Adam plays a seductive, dangerous, amoral psychopath. Not for kiddies. His performance equals that of Anthony Hopkins in 'Magic', but with different subject matter)
[This turns up now and again on ebay and will be on video]

2. Keyman:Finding Redemption
Adam plays a homeless and somewhat deranged bum on the streets. Then you slowly find out why. HUGE, ginormous box of tissues required. This film should have been picked up for general release and then Adam would almost certainly have got an Oscar nomination. If this doesn't make you cry, you have a heart of stone.
[Available via the director's website on DVD. DON'T read the blurb on the back first, please - it's too spoilery!]

Phoar! Your icon!! YUM!!! Stripper!Casey, oh if *only*. I would *so* love to see that. And another dream of mine is to see Casey in full military dress uniform. (That was in a fic on this site, can't remember which one, now - but oh, the image!)

Mmm, Adam as a seductive psychopath? I'd've hunted that down, only we don't have a VCR any more (hubby likes the latest tech, the VCR went the way of the dodo a good few years ago). Ah, but I can get the other one - I'll definitely order that!

Serial monogamist since '98.

X Files for a couple years, Sentinel for a while, Due South for three years, and HP for three years. With some overlap where I was only flirting, honest! I, too, have watched a lot of Adam Baldwin, but there are things I won't watch even for him. :) I'd probably watch his bad early movies over Daybreak, but I'm too cheap to buy them!

I liked early X-Files, but again, not one of my obsessions. (And by about S3 it just went up its own rectum.) (Although I found some *fantastic* Mulder/Skinner slash fic out there...) Yay, Due South (I'm Canadian, I've got to like it!) HP??

My dirty little secret is one show that I spent altogether too much time watching was... War of the Worlds. Absolute dross, but I liked the character of Colonel Ironhorse. I can watch just about any old rubbish so long as there's a character that intrigues me.

After the first X-Men movie I also got really into the X-Men cartoon because it was the only way to feed the obsession - like reedsangel says, getting hooked on a film can make life difficult!

My first obsession and foray into fanfiction started with Star Trek TNG but I wasn't into slash because as you can see from my icon I was big Imzadi fan which is were I got my love for psychic connections between lovers. My second obsession was where I first learned to love slash and that was the Sentinel. I was and still am totally obsessed with Sentinel and guides and the connection between them. Then I got into Firefly and found Rayne through reading some stories where with River's psychic ability the writers were able to give River and Jayne a psychic connection. And though I loved Mal/Jayne slash I still am a total Rayne obsessed person. Firefly made me a fan of Adam's so I of course found all could with him in it. I even have a copy of Starquest...lol. So with the AB obsession I had to watch Chuck and of course immediatly I saw the slashiness between Casey and Chuck. No psychic connection but that's what AU's are for ( ... )
