Do you write original fiction as well? If so, do you publish it online? If not, why do you prefer writing fanfiction to original fiction?

Why types of shows/books/movies tend to motivate you to write fanfiction? Do you like to stay very true to the original ideas/characters or do you like to create an alternate-universe? Someone once told me that I should write what I know, so in my fanfiction, there are often references to people that I know, or situations that either I've been in, or someone close to me has been in.
