FOR WRITERS
Do you write original fiction as well? If so, do you publish it online? If not, why do you prefer writing fanfiction to original fiction?
1- Yes 2- No 3- Fan fiction is easier as the characters are already created.
Favorite Genre to Write (angst, romance, action, etc): Angst and romance
Why types of shows/books/movies tend to motivate you to write fanfiction? Do you like to stay very true to the original ideas/characters or do you like to create an alternate-universe? Either way, what types of original additions do you usually add to make the story your own?
1- Alias is the only one that has ever motivated me to write. 2- I like to stay as close to in character as I can in an alternate universe. If I stay in universe, I like to expand on what's already there. 3- I like to think I make the characters real. Not the cardboard they are on the show.
What are some of the freedoms and/or restrictions you have experienced as someone who publishes their writing on the web? What continues to motivate you to write? What discourages you?
1- Any restrictions have come from myself. I don't post to the masses and have no desire to. 2- The characters themselves motivate me to write. The need to tell their story, to expand on what we don't see. It's more for me than anything else. 3- Negativity. Not about writing, but in the fandom in general.
What purpose does writing serve in your life? Do you write for a living? As a hobby? What other types of writing do you most often produce?
1- It allows me to share what I feel about the characters and life in general. I love writing and it gives me something to do. 2- I write a hobby and have no aspirations for anything else. 3- Other than fanfic, I write poetry and songs.
Do you hope/plan to ever publish your writing in the traditional manner? If so, how do you think that posting fanfiction has helped you towards this goal?
1- No 2- If I had plans, I think it has helped because I've learned so much abour writing and grew while doing it.
FOR READERS
How many hours per week would you say that you spend reading fanfiction? Two to three
What types of fanfiction do you most enjoy? (genre, fandom, pairings, etc) X-Files: I love case files. M/S romance. West Wing: Josh/Donna AU stories that are realistic.
Why do you enjoy reading fanfiction instead of original fiction or novels? I enjoy both, but being able to read about characters you already know in lots of differnt situations is great. A book, unless a series, that's all you get. With fanfiction it never ends and can take you anywhere.
What do you consider to be 'good-quality fanfic'? What will 'hook' you into reading a story? They have to be in character and semi-realistic. Well thought and planned out. Good angst always hooks me. Hospitals and bedside vigils are my crack.
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of reading online fiction versus the traditional book?
I think the advantages is the variety if you can find good quality fic in your fandom without leaving home. On the other side, a book doesn't tie you to your computer, although in the past, I've printed out long novels and read them at a park.
