I've wanted to go vegan for some time, and the only thing that has really held me back is that I love going out to dinner (when I can afford it). Eating should be a big social experience enjoyed with lots of wine and good friends, and having been a pescatarian for some time, I've always had a huge chip on my shoulder about how limited my options ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. What concerns me is that the area I live in isn't really geared towards alternative lifestyles! Plus I used to live with a vegan at uni and it seems like theres a hell of a lot of research that goes into sticking to it properly!

Ooh I hadn't thought about the Thai thing, though! Maybe I'll just live off that!

Why do you think you'd never be able to eat out again on a vegan diet? I have a vegan friend or two who seem to manage...

hey I'm in exactly the same position, i believe very strongly in animal rights but can't seem to give up fish or seafood, i love it too much!
i just think that you need to draw your own line about these things, and being pescatarian is better than nothing...

*Boo* You gotta do what you feel is right for you hunni. I know what you mean about eating out, esp. if all you want is a f**king sandwich!!!

You gotta follow what it means to you, you'll find that quite a few people aren't too strict when it comes to eating out, but there are these magical places *cackles madly*

Ok, me and most of the vegans I know kinda take morality breaks after a while. You just get lazy and say "hey it's a veggie-burger, it's probably vegan", and as long as you don't find out, it's morally ok.

Or something. Fuck it. There's no such thing as "true" vegan anyway, just people with differing levels of food-nazism and pretentious "holier-than-thou" egotism.

Haha yeah you're probably right! I think I'll be sticking to my rule of only eating eggs that come from chickens with happy lives (ie farmers' markets and my mum's hippie friends and etc), but dairy I just have to cut out. Its fucking evil!!!

Perhaps the better option would to be a fregan, and therefore not fund any of the cruelty involved in the food industry. If only I could be bothered to root around in dumpsters at midnight!

Freeganism is definately the best moral option, but possibly the least practical one.

Cut out all industrial farmed eggs, and make the switch to soya products, and you'll be fine :)

Yeah bruv,

I haven't actually eaten dairy other than cheese for a long time. However, I have a rather lame situation next weekend which I have been repeatedly caned for this weekend while away on a hen doo. On Saturday two of my friends are getting married, and I gave in my meal options months ago, so I'm stuck looking like a twat, having told everyone I'm going vegan, with a prawn cocktail starter and cheese cake dessert! They will mock me! Lol never mind. Every wedding I've waitressed at recently has employed a chef who seems to think a vegan meal is lettuce and tomatoes, so I think I'm happy for my principles to be on the sidelines for that!
