Isane peered up at Unohana with bloodshot eyes as she sat hunched over a pile of papers. "If it's not one thing it's another," she said, signing her name off on yet another form. Duty rosters, requisitions, assigning supplies and personnel to areas of greatest need... all of those things fell to Isane to approve or veto. Normally there was enough paperwork to keep her busy, but now she was practically swimming through all the papers she had to sign.

Taking a sip of water from a glass, Isane sat her brush down and ran her fingers through her hair. She felt exhausted, but at the same time jittery from the stimulants that had kept her alert during the attacks. She wondered how much longer it would be before the pace returned to normal. Or, at least as normal as the pace ever got around the Fourth Division ( ... )

Unohana pondered the question as she hung her haori on a hook on the wall. It was uncomfortably warm with it on right now, with all the running back and forth across the division, even with the chilly weather. When had she last rested? Far too long, if finding the answer was so difficult ( ... )

A casual observer might've noted that their conversation sounded almost like an exchange between a mother and daughter, and Isane would be the first to admit that Unohana-taichou was very much like a mother to her. Since Kiyone's passing, the older woman was the closest thing to family that Isane had ( ... )

"It takes time," she responded with a grin of her own. "A few more decades, or a century or two, and perhaps you will possess it ( ... )

Unohana hadn't posed a direct question, but Isane knew exactly what her captain was asking about. She blushed and averted her eyes, but smiled all the same. Isane had suspected that Unohana-taichou had known about the flowers since the beginning. It'd have been more surprising if she hadn't, honestly. That was what normalcy meant in the Fourth; a motherly, almost frighteningly perceptive captain.

If there was anyone in the world that Isane could speak to frankly about her feelings, it was Unohana-taichoul. Sure, there would always be some hemming and hawing, but it was easy to open up and share with her.

"Yes, spending time with friends is very relaxing." She paused and shook her head with an embarrassed grin. "Sometimes, that is," she added. "Sometimes it's just awkward."
