HERE Masterpost Jack was pacing, practically running a hole in the hardwood. He was biting his thumbnail to the point that the tip was peeling off, letting out these worried little noises.
"Jack," Joyce said, trying to get him to calm down. "Tell me what happened. What's going on?"
Jack didn't talk for a while, didn't listen really until his mother placed a firm hand on Jack's chest.
"Alex is in trouble," he exclaimed.
"You keep saying that, but tell me what happened," she panned, stopping him from moving all together so that she could look into his eyes, trying to find an answer.
"I saw Oliver and he saw me and it was bad," Jack explained in a rush, finishing out of breath. His dark eyes were wide, evidence of wetness in them. "I'm really scared for him."
The door unlocked just then, both of them freezing and staring at it. In that moment, Jack had never been more terrified and hopefully at the same time. Terrified because, what if it wasn't Alex, but hopeful because, what if it was.
Jack let out a sigh of relief when he saw the man's honey brown eyes, his caramel hair and as far as Jack could tell, he hadn't been hurt or shaken up.
"Alex," he squeaked, pulling away from his mother to tug the man into an unexpected embrace. Jack hugged him tight, not letting go until Alex informed him that he could barely breathe.
"Where have you been?" Jack asked, pulling away from the man only enough to press their foreheads and noses together.
"I just went to pick up a book at the book shop and get a coffee," Alex squeaked, obviously confused and a little scared of how Jack was acting. His eyes flipped to Jack's mom then, obviously wondering if she was watching them. She was, with terrified eyes.
"God, you scared me," Jack whispered, shaking a little as he nuzzled into the man. "I saw Oliver and...it was bad."
"What?" Alex whimpered, dropping his bag accidentally. "Did he see you?"
Jack nodded, a grave look on your face. "He was waiting for you outside of school, Alex."
Alex let out a surprised but shaky breath. "W-," was all he could get out before Jack was hushing him, moving him over to sit on the couch. Jack sat next to him, pulling him in again.
Joyce was bustling around, turning on the fire place and turning the TV to a quiet murmur. She brought them both cups of hot chocolate, setting them down on the coffee table.
They boy were still close when she left to get back to the kitchen. They weren't talking, just kind of sitting there in anticipation for something they weren't sure was going to happen or what it was.
"Jack?" Alex whispered, so soft that the mentioned boy wasn't sure he heard it.
"Hm?" Jack hummed back, rubbing gentle circles into Alex's back.
"I'm scared," the man admitted, shaking a little and Jack nodded.
"I know, Lex," he said, nuzzling his nose into Alex's ear. "I am too."
They spent a while like that, not really moving unless either had to go to the bathroom, and before they knew it, it was midnight.
"I think I'm going to try and get some sleep, Jack," Alex spoke then, pulling away just a bit. Jack allowed him to, taking him upstairs and making sure he was alright. All the lights in the house were turned down, Joyce having gone to bed a while before hand, so Jack turned off Alex's light before making his way down to the basement.
He spent the whole night making a decision.
---
When Alex woke up, it was at 6 am to the sound of Jack banging around in the kitchen. He got up shakily, making his way silently down the stairs.
Jack was standing in front of the stove, an egg in the frying pan and toast sitting, already toasted, in the toaster.
"Lex," he said, turning around like he hadn't seen the man or noticed his presence until then. Alex didn't say anything. "Sit, I'm making you breakfast."
The man gave Jack a tiny smile, sitting himself at the table as Jack front the plate over.
Alex didn't really touch it until Jack sat down next to him, empty handed as to his own meal.
Jack finally spoke after a minute.
"You know that you can't go to school today, right? We can't?" Jack said, then clarified.
Alex looked up at him through his fringe, nodding silently. They didn't talk for a while again as Alex ate. Jack just sat back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling.
"Alex," he finally said, after what felt like hours. Their eyes met as Alex was obviously waiting for a bomb to drop from Jack's mouth, his eyes squinted like he was already sceptical.
"Alex, I want you to go," Jack allowed and Alex instantly sat back in his chair, giving Jack an incredulous look.
"What?" he whispered and Jack gave him a nod. Alex wasn't even sure that he heard the boy right, "really?"
"Yeah," he confirmed, biting down on his bottom lip. "I, actually, bought your ticket last night," he said, pulling out his debit card like that would show Alex that he was serious. He guessed it did by how the man's eyes opened wide, jaw dropping a little. His eyes shifted from the card to Jack.
"Jack," he said in almost a scolding tone. "That must have cost a small fortune. How could you do that?"
"I wanted to," he said, dropping his eyes to the ground, as he bit his bottom lip. He did want to do what he did next, he'd been dreading it for the past two days, but he sucked it up. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" Alex asked, tone softening a little but the look of concern was still there on his gorgeous features.
"I shouldn't have been an ass to you," Jack said, cheeks turning red. He was never one to apologize, much less apologize and actually mean it. "I just..."
"What?" Alex asked, reaching a hesitant hand out to cup Jack's scruffy jaw.
"I didn't want to lose you." He hated admitting it, but the way Alex's eyes lit up a little made up for the fact.
"Do you want to lose me now?" Alex whispered. At first Jack thought he was teasing, but there was no evidence of it on his face. Jack shook his head.
"But you leave tomorrow to Essex."
Alex scowled a little, trying to force a smile but when he couldn't he just leaned in and pressed their lips together. Jack kissed back, reaching up and cupping both of his hands against Alex's face and pulling him closer, closer, closer until Alex was having to lean off of his own chair to reach Jack.
They kissed for a good minute before Alex pulled back, taking in a breath and letting it out against Jack's lips.
"Finish your breakfast. I'll call school, and then you call school," Jack instructed.
That day went by pretty quietly. Joyce had asked why they weren't at school when they got up, and they told her - explained it all. She hadn't been too happy with Jack paying for the whole ticket, but Jack just reminded her that it was his money and that's where he wanted it to go.
She went off the work at around nine and Jack and Alex pretty much just sat around, keeping Delilah pretty close, because whether or not she was small, she was still a comfort.
At about three Alex told Jack that he needed to pick things up from the store and Jack allowed it, telling Alex to take his car because the RangeRover would be too easily spotted and he'd have to walk a few blocks to get to it too, since he'd been smart and parked it away from Jack's house. So he left for Baltimore, and when he got back it was already five pm, just starting to dusk outside.
Jack spent most of that night helping Alex get his things in order and into the luggage that Alex had bought.
"Well, you'll have to leave out your tooth brush and stuff 'cause you'll need it tonight," Jack said, pulling out the item from the bag and rolling his eyes at the man.
"Oh, right," Alex agreed, slapping his palm gently over his forehead.
"Unless you don't brush those rabbity teeth of yours," Jack teased, pulling Alex against him; his back to Jack's front and leaning in to place a kiss on Alex's cheek.
"Rabbity?!" Alex exclaimed, holding a hand over his mouth. "They are not!"
"Are too!" Jack laughed, trying to tug Alex's hand down but failing. "The two front ones are longer."
Alex scowled at him pulling away.
"Oh, don't be a baby," Jack joked, leaning in as soon as he'd won the battle with Alex's hand, placing a kiss on his lips. Alex was quick to wrap his arms around Jack's neck, deepening it with what seemed like a rather wicked passion.
Jack hadn't really intended for the kiss to mean so much to the man, but apparently it had. It wasn't like Jack was about to stop Alex from running his hand up the front of his shirt, he'd never be one to do something like that.
He didn't stop Alex from pushing him back onto the bed either, as he pushed the duffle bag out of the way and crawled on top of the younger.
Jack looked up at him, his legs hanging off the edge of the bed and smirked. He reached both hands up, placing them on Alex's shoulders and pushed him over with force.
Alex landed on the bed with an ‘UMPH’, a little dumbfounded as his breath hitched in his throat. Jack stood in front of him as Alex sat up, crawling forward until he could lean against the boy, nuzzling his nose against Jack's chest.
"Jack," Alex hummed against the boy's skin. Jack waited for him to talk, a thick eyebrow raised. "I'm scared about tomorrow."
Jack let out a long sigh, pushing Alex back against the headboard gently before sitting across from him. He didn't want to, but he was going to listen. Alex figured he was expecting more of an explanation and glanced down at the duvet.
"I haven't seen my parents for years; haven't lived with them since I was in middle school," Alex said, reaching forward to absent-mindedly play with a patch of Jack's jeans.
"Why did you come to America?" Jack asked, biting his bottom lip as he tried to listen.
"Uhm," Alex started. "They wanted me to get away from the place I was in," he explained. "I was going to a Catholic school when I figured out I was gay."
Jack nodded, completely understanding but becoming a little intrigued.
"I guess everyone else figured it out too," Alex continued, laughing a little as the tops of his cheeks turned pinkish. "So I came here and lived with my aunt and uncle through highschool."
Jack wasn't sure what to say to that. It's not like it was awkward or anything, there was just no area of expertise for Jack to clue in on. Middle school was regular for him, as was highschool. He was just a normal, horny teenager. Chasing after girls and fucking them had been his specialty since day one. Well, maybe not. There was that one time he got a really bad hair cut-
"Jack, are you listening to me?" Alex asked, laughing a little as Jack figured out the man had been talking to him the entire time.
"No," Jack admitted.
"What were you thinking about?" Alex reached forward, taking his hand as he chuckled.
"Oh, you know," Jack said sheepishly. "Highschool."
Alex didn't say anything for a while, just tried to enjoy the comfortable quiet and warmth in the room.
"Are you bummed that you'll have Miss Mae again?" he asked finally, pulling his knees up to his chest, giving Jack a teasing smile.
Jack grinned back. "Yeah, I'm definitely not going to be able to fantasize about her like I do about you."
Alex raised his eyebrows then, giving Jack in credulous look. "Well, fuck, I hope not. Unless, it's not me; you're just into English teachers."
Jack laughed. "Oh, absolutely," he teased. "It just really gets me all hard when we study Shakespeare."
Alex cracked up.
"And they way you read that to us and make us learn the vocabulary for it," he paused, clenching his teeth to prove his point. "Just, UNF."
"Oh my God, stop it," Alex managed through his laughing. "You're so stupid."
"Yeah, I know, but I can't help it," Jack chuckled with him.
It just felt right.
Okay, he knew it sounded cliché and stupid, but the whole Alex situation just felt right to Jack. Everything with Alex felt natural, like it was supposed to happen. Whether Jack was going to admit it or not, he was really, really dreading the next day.
Jack had always been one to deny shit.
When there were problems for Jack, he usually just denied they were there until they went away or died down, but that wasn't working for him this time. Just pretending that Alex wasn't leaving wasn't going to make him stay, and admitting he was going wasn't going to stop him either.
No matter what Jack did, Alex had a plane to catch at ten the next morning.
