I thought the vidder profile might be enough navel gazing for one year but I just couldn’t resist this meme. It’s always amusing to look back at the way a year has gone compared to what I thought I’d be doing in the meme the year before it.

My favourite video this year (of my own):
I’m most proud of Unnatural Selection but Seven Nation Army is my personal favourite this year. I find myself drawn to its rather more optimistic charms plus editing Matrix source was the single most pleasurable vidding experience of the year.

My least favourite:
I’m actually pretty pleased with the way all my vids turned out this year. I’m just disappointed not to have made at least a couple more. So with only four vids this year I refuse to sacrifice any of them to this question.

Most successful video:
Unnatural Selection was easily my most successful vid of the year by all possible methods of measuring it. It was made for kiki_miserychic and so if she alone had liked it I would have been happy. The fact that it seemed to click with so many people was hugely satisfying.

Video most under appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
I can’t claim to have any underappreciated vids this year, either. They all did way better than I expected or could have hoped for. I have been truly happy with the response to my vids this year.

Most fun video to make:
Hands down Smile was the most fun to make. It was a remaster so the bulk of the donkey work was already done. I know BtVS better than I know any other source so it was the vidding equivalent of snuggling into a big comfy sweater.

Hardest video to make:
Unnatural Selection required me to jump through the most hoops technically but I didn’t find the challenge unpleasant. Marvellous Party gave me the most headaches early on because all but one of the sources was virgin territory for me so I spent a week overdosing on films about polite society at the end of which I felt so angry that these people were so wrapped up in their petty lives utterly oblivious to events in the wider world that I had to take time out to regroup. Once I got going on the editing I had a lot of fun on the whole. I also discovered that I hugely ship Colin Firth/ Rupert Everett which was a nice surprise.

Video with single sexiest moment:
Fireworks!

The things I've learnt this year:
If I don’t make a start on a vid within a few weeks of having the idea the chances of me ever completing said vid to my satisfaction are pretty remote.

I need deadlines in order to truncate the procrastination part of my vidding process.

Things to work on in 2010:
This is traditionally the part where I say I want to do something clever with after effects but actually a fair amount of the editing for Unnatural Selection was done in AE so although it wasn’t hugely flashy I find it has satisfied that particular desire.

John Simm was not in a single frame of any of vids this year, I must make amends next year.

To have only put out 4 vids this year is rather disappointing. I am on the home straight with my festivids vid so I am probably going to complete that just under the wire for 2009 although it won’t be posted til 2010 but still very disappointing.

I had hoped to finish a vid at least once every couple of months but my inspiration and enthusiasm evaporated during the second half of the year. This was partly because the post VVC slump was particularly huge this year. Also most of the shows I was most fannish about at the beginning of the year were gone by the end of it. One (Doctor Who) wasn’t airing a full season, one came to the end of its run (BSG), 2 were axed (T:SCC, Life) and I became so disillusioned with two (House, Heroes) that I ditched them midseason. I fell out of fannish love with SPN and Merlin and although there are a few new shows I enjoy (White Collar, Glee, Flashforward) I’m not sure I feel strongly enough to make me open Premiere for them.

I need to stop talking myself out of vid projects before I have even started them. This has increasingly become a feature of my vidding life. Abandoning vids is nothing new to me but giving up before I’ve even started is an extremely frustrating development.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this coming year:
The Shawshank Redemption vid is still a work in progress one year on. I hope to return to it in the new year. I made a start on a Carnivale vid (a project wanting to happen for at least 3yrs) that I am loath to give up on just yet even though it is possibly the most miserable vidding experience I have ever had. I signed up to vid_the_grid way back and haven’t made a single vid for it yet despite having ideas for almost all the prompts.

Happy Holidays! Have a very enjoyable week. bop_radar I received the most lovely card from you yesterday. I think it was responsible for my first warm and fuzzy feelings of the season, thank you so much.
