i've never really taken to sketching, in the same way that i hate practicing a musical instrument...i don't like to do anything for practical reasons even if it makes you better in the long run. i also find sketching things in the real world to be less fun for me than going directly to colorful paints and imaginary landscapes ( Read more... )

I hate sketching with pencil, I prefer a very fine tip pen. The paper cones are an enigma to me too! Please show more of your drawings!

I love fine pens too but I mess up a lot! I never really learned how to shade properly with a pen. I don't really know how to do anything properly though, when I think about it! ;)

I will post drawings as I do them, it's a good motivating thingie!

Yeah, I'm trying to post more of my 2-D art in my other journal so it's not a total advertisement for my etsy shop all of the time :)

You could do a shadow of yourself sitting on a bench sketching a UFO that's hovering overhead. Just a thought.....

everything is better with the addition of a UFO, bat wings, or antennae i think.

I agree! Even Bush looks better with the alien -- because that way there is one intelligent being in the photo.

I'm convinced ball point pens of the legendary Bic cheap variety were made for sketching in a clandestine way of supporting the arts, honestly. They're fabulous - handle like pencils, but without the smudge, and a wonderfully rich yet varied line like spider legs and webs.

If I learned anything in art school, it's that using whatever's available to sketch with is what's ultimately right. Stolen silver testing pencils and Bic pens are biblical to me now.

you're so right! i really can't get comfortable with anything else. on the one hand i'm intimidated by 'real' pens but scanners seem to pick up Bic just fine so i might as well stick with them!

I like it! I like your hands. I actually like to draw, but I don't sketch much. Like, for the basis of a painting, I don't sketch it, I do a complete drawing, then the painting over the top of it. If I want to map out the composition of a painting without any detail, then I'll sketch, and my sketches are basically very vague blobs and that's about it. But I think I'm actually better at drawing than painting in some ways.

that's how i paint too -- directly onto the canvas, very rough, and then i fill it in. sometimes it's just a few general vague lines. i'm generally happy when i draw, but i find i need something to draw FROM, and unless the cats will sit still i just don't know what to draw. my usual fantasy subject matter doesn't need models!
