In the Past:
one two three hmmm... another long first sentence :P
All there was left to do now, was to wait for the bell to ring, as I stated earlier, all I really did in class was talk with my friends, so it didn’t feel like a long wait.
BEEEEEEP. FREEDOM. Siwon and I waited until everyone left the room before heading out ourselves. We tried to seem natural as we strolled down to the music room. Crap, I hear voices. Wait, that's Xiah’s voice. What was Xiah doing down here after school? As we made our way down, the voices stopped. We walked into the room and Xiah and Park Yoochun hyung were in the room. They were standing in front of the piano. I noted that Xiah’s face was bright red.
Interesting.
“We were just...” My brother began, but then I got an idea.
“We won’t ask what you two are doing down here, if you don’t ask us.” I pointed to all the appropriate people as I made my proposition. Now I was happy that it was just Xiah and Yoochun hyung down here, instead of someone else.
“Deal.” Xiah said quickly. Too quickly. Okay, now I DO want to know what they were/are doing in here. Oh well, when we get home, I’ll just bug him until he tells me. Siwon nodded and headed back up the stairs. I went over and grabbed one of the CD players. My brother and Micky just raised an eyebrow in question as I waved them goodbye and made my way back up the stairs. But I didn't enter the hallway until I heard Siwon tell me that it was “all clear”. Then as quickly as we could, we made our way to the main entrance/exit of the school. Siwon would go up ahead of me. Peep into the open doors in the hallway, then motion for me to follow when it was “safe”. We wound up making it to the exit and outside without any trouble. We then sprinted to the parking lot. No use in getting caught now, you know.
Now, I had expected there to still be a lot of people in the parking lot when we got there, really I did. But I didn’t expect there to be a crowd all gathered around waiting to see four freshman, dance. I knew I would be okay with performing, but what about the others, did they really still remember the dance? Kibum was already there in the center of the crowd. When he saw us he held up the CD. Awesome, everything is finally coming together. This plan might actually work! We got to the center of the crowd and Ryeowook finally appeared behind us.
“Did you find her?” I asked. This whole thing would be pointless if she wasn’t here.
“Yup, she’s on her way right now, she had to finish packing her school stuff.” He replied. YES! Yes times five!
“All right then, let’s get things set up.” Siwon said. He took the CD player from me and he and Kibum headed to one corner of the ...circle (circles have no corners, but you get it, right?) that had formed around us. I now only hoped that Eun Sun could actually see us. I quickly scanned around, but didn’t see her, she was probably still inside, she’ll be out here soon though, Ryeowook wouldn’t lie to me.
“Hey, before we begin, don’t you think you should tell the crowd why we’re dancing.” Ryeowook suggested.
“Me?”
“Well, yeah, this is for your girl, after all.” He said. He was right. I scanned the crowd again. Although I still didn’t see her, I spoke up anyway. She’ll hear me at least if she doesn’t get a good view. And if she’s late, her friends will be able to repeat my message to her.
“Ummm, if I could have your attention for a minute, please.” I began. Kibum and Siwon were back next to me, and they too turned their attention to me. “What you’re about to see, is a dance that is being dedicated to a very special girl named Bae Eun Sun.” Every female in the audience said “AWWW’’. The guys rolled their eyes. Right, so now that’s over with. Now for the real show.
“Ready?” Siwon asked. He was asking all of us. We nodded and got into position. This was it. I was so excited. I was really about to dance for the girl I’m in love with, in front of the whole sch-... in front of most of the Juniors and Seniors and whoever else came out to watch, but most importantly, I was about to dance in front of her.
Kibum nodded his head to some kid that he had appointed to press the “play” button on the CD player. The music began. And we all jumped up.
To describe the dance in detail, would be both tedious and pointless. Tedious because there is a lot to it, both in hand and footwork, and pointless because it all seemed to happen so quickly that I felt like we had only just begun by the time I landed the last dance move. Then again, it always feels like that when I perform. But I will say it was good, if you can image what a good dance performance featuring four guys and an Usher song looks like, yeah, it was just like that.
When it was over, the crowd cheered and we all bowed. Some of our friends, and even some of the upper classmen, came up to compliment us personally. I was only listening with half an ear though. I was too busy scanning the crowd (third times the charm, eh) for that one person whose feedback on our performance was the only one that I really cared to hear. But I didn’t see her, again. So I went over to Ryeowook.
“Are you sure she was coming?” I asked him.
“Thanks... Oh what?” He turned from the person he was talking to, to me. “Yeah, she did, didn’t you see her?” Wait, that means he saw her... WHERE?
“No.” I looked again. Ryeowook started looking to. Okay, maybe he didn’t see her...
“See there, she’s right there.” My heart started beating faster as he said it. WHERE WHERE? I tried to follow where he was pointing. There was a whole group of girls, but I didn’t see her. Have I gone Eun Sun blind?
“Where?”
“Right there.” He pointed again. “In-between Kim Hyun Min nuna, and Lim Hyun Ja.” He added, I looked. And In-between Kim Hyun Min nuna and Lim Hyun Ja was...
Bae Eun Soo, Eun Sun’s younger sister. She was in the eighth grade. Our school is so small that the Junior High (the seventh and eighth grade) are in the same building as the High School, though they have their own section of the school (to keep us older ones from being tempted to shove them into lockers... or something). So we don’t see them much. Though we did see HER last year, when we were in eighth grade and she was in seventh. Heck, she even sat at our lunch table. (Eun Sun asked and I couldn’t say “no”.)
Bae Eun Soo is not Bae Eun Sun. Bae Eun Soo is not Bae Eun Sun. Bae Eun Soo is not Bae Eun Sun. Bae Eun Soo is not Bae Eun Sun. RYEOWOOK, YOU IDIOT!!!
“That’s not her.” I said calmly.
“It’s not?” He squinted to where he had just pointed. “But that’s the girl that came over when I asked for “Bae Eun Sun”.”
“Did you say “Bae Eun Sun” or “Bae Eun SOO”?”
“What’s the difference?”
“Just the fact that they are two different people, THAT’S HER YOUNGER SISTER, SHE SAT WITH US AT LUNCH LAST YEAR, DON’T YOU REMEMBER!?”
“Whoa, what’s going on here?” Siwon was by my side asking. Ryeowook looked scared. Most of the people were already leaving. Dad was making his way over to me/us, and I saw Mom heading over to our car.
“He got the wrong girl.” I said to Siwon through clenched teeth.
“Who’d he get?”
“Bae Eun Soo.”
“Why’d you get her, you were suppose to get Eun Sun, who’s Eun Soo?” Siwon asked Ryeowook, but I answered.
“Her younger sister.”
“Ohhhh, hey that’s right, I remember her now, she sat with us during lunch last year, right?” He asked as he looked over to the girl I had just pointed to, the girl that is not Eun Sun.
“I’m really sorry.” Ryeowook said. I just glared at him.
“What’s that look for?” I turned to the voice. It was Dad.
“He got the wrong girl.” Siwon explained to him. Dad just waited for more information.
“Forget it, I’ll tell you later.” I said. He shook his head. I was getting ready to hear something about how I shouldn’t talk to him with “that” attitude, or something similar to it, but instead I got.
“Fine, and while you do that, you can also explain to your mother and I, why you felt the need to skip your Korean class today.”
“I didn’t skip.” I was there for most of it.
“They why did you get sent down to the Principal’s office during lunch?”
“Cause... they thought I skipped.” I was grounded. No maybe not grounded, but I was probably not allowed to go on the computer when I got home. The only other punishment I could get would be to clean the house. It really does depend on what kind of mood my parents are in. Though don’t ask me which mood goes with which punishment. I gave up trying to understand my parents loooong ago.
“Why don’t you work on your excuse as we make our way over to the car.” He motioned for me to go with him. My friends whispered goodbye to me and then said goodbye to my dad. I’d like to note that Ryeowook ran away the fastest. I then followed Dad over to our car. Mom was already inside. He had turned it, and the heat, on. The car needs about five minutes to warm up before the heater starts working. He scooted over to the passenger side as Dad got in behind the wheel. I got into the back seat, and noticed I was the only one.
“Isn’t Xiah coming?”
“He’s staying after with Micky, they’re working on some secret performance for the talent show this year, or something.” Mom said. Though I knew he knew more about it than that. He wouldn’t be our mother if he didn’t.
“Doesn’t he have work today?”
“Micky offered to drive him there when they’re done.” He answered. Micky can drive?... but he’s only a sophomore... right?
“Something weird is going on with those two.” I said. I didn’t miss the quick glance Mom and Dad made to one another. They knew something, and they were deciding whether or not I was “old” enough to know. I hate when they do that.
“You know, you can tell me, I’m only four years younger then you two, and only one year younger then Xiah.” Really, what the heck am I not old enough to know? I want to know.
“And we’ll acknowledge that fact as soon as you act like it.” Dad said. Ohhh, I should have seen that one coming. They usually say that when Xiah or I bring up our age difference. Dad started to leave the school parking lot and head out onto the main road. Mom glanced at Dad, I think he thought Dad was being a bit harsh to me. I agree.
He turned around in his seat and said. “Minnie, honey, why did you and your friends get sent down to the Principal’s office, and now is not the time for excuses.” He warned. He gave another glance to Dad, who kept his eyes on the road.
“We all left our C - Block classes to go practice a skit that we were going to perform at lunch for Eun Sun.”
“The girl you danced for today?” Dad asked.
“The girl he is in love with.” Mom corrected/added. I just sunk lower in my seat as Dad glanced at me through the rear view mirror.
“And what, you got caught out of class by one of the teachers?” Dad asked.
“No, the Principal.”
“Wow, you’re just having all kinds of bad luck today, aren’t you?” Mom asked.
“Tell me about it.”
“Still, you shouldn’t have skipped your class, so when we get home...” Dad was about to discipline me, it sounded like it would be the “clean house” one, but then I remembered something and cut him off (I know, not too smart to do, right?).
“I know, but why should I get punished, Mom leaves his Nutrition class to go visit you.” It was true. A few times on my way to the bathroom I would see Mom standing in the doorway of a class. Knowing their schedules, I knew it was Dad’s Korean class (and because I saw Dad as I walked by it), and Mom was suppose to be in Nutrition 2, during that time, it’s a cooking class.
“That’s different.” Mom said. Of course, parents get all the exceptions.
“How?”
“Well for one, I finish all my work in Nutrition before I leave the class, and secondly, I inform the teacher that I am leaving and he lets me.” And that’s because he secretly has a thing for Mom, secretly as in the whole school knows it except for Mom, and of course, no one told Dad either. Though I think they just pretend not to know.
“So.” I knew I wasn’t going to win this one, but damnit, I had to try.
“So, did you finish all of your work in your korean class?”
“No.”
“Did you tell your teacher you would be gone for the rest of the class?”
“No.”
“And so that is why when we get home, you, and not me, are going to clean up the house. That includes sweeping the kitchen and wiping down all the counter surfaces, cleaning the living room, all the bedrooms, the bathroom, and taking out the trash.” Mom said, Dad just nodded. I guess that they had planned my punishment together. I mean it was so detailed and all. But they planned it before I even told them what really happened. Why did they assume I was getting punished? (I mean just because there were already rumors floating around saying I skipped class by the time I ran into Mom...) I could have really been sent down for a good reason too, you know. They have no faith in me, I swear.
