In the Past: one two

My Algebra and Korean class dragged on for ages. I think it was because I wanted to get to lunch and get that meeting with the Principal over with. It seems, from what others are saying, that some kid in Siwon’s class needed to use the bathroom, (some teachers only allow one kid to go at a time... others just don’t care) and so he was waiting for Siwon to return, ten minutes later he reported to the teacher that Siwon had been out for a while. And since our teachers LOVE to talk, it was made known that I was also absent from my class for a long time. Why Ryeowook and Kyuhyun weren’t reported missing is beyond me. But, at least they have to still go down to the office too. It was only Kibum who got away scot free. The traitor. A useless traitor at that.

“Okay you're dismissed.” The teacher said. Because there are three different lunch times, it would be too confusing it there was a bell for the beginning and end to each one as well as a beginning and end to each class (because of the different times). So, during the hour of first lunch (10:30 - 11:00) and third (12:00 to 12:30), the teachers just dismiss us when the time is right.

I started speed walking to the office as soon as we were let out. I was the first one in the main office. Then Ryeowook entered. I felt like glaring at him but I didn’t. Even if he lied, it was obvious the principal didn’t believe him so for all I knew he might be getting a worse punishment then me for lying to her face. I should feel sorry for him really. Kyuhyun too, since he conceded with the lie. Kyuhyun walked in as I thought his name and Siwon came in soon after. We sat in the chairs that are lined up in front of the main office desk. We had to wait to be called into her office, even though she knew we were coming.

“What are you boys in here for?” The Main Office Secretary asked.

“Yes, I was kinda wondering that one myself?” I looked over at the source of the second voice. It was Mom. He had a folder in his hand. And he tilted his head at us in question. It was still weird knowing that everyone else knew what Mom really meant/was to me. I mean it’s not like he acted ‘momish’ in school, at least, I don’t think he did.

“Hey, Jaejoong hyung, it’s nothing, the principal just wants to see us for a moment.” Siwon said. Wow, he told the truth without revealing that we were in trouble. I feel so proud to be his friend. I’m also glad that I had decided not to answer.

But then the reminder that this is a small school came back.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with you lot skipping your classes, to hang out in the cafeteria, does it?” He was looking right at me as he spoke. There goes my computer privileges, now the question is for how long? Depending on his and Dad’s mood, I could get anywhere from two days to two weeks of no computer time. Two weeks would kill my social life.

“It was for a good cause.” I blurted out. Siwon just shook his head at me. He was embarrassed to be my friend at that moment.

“Tell me all about it later.” Mom said as he handed the folder to the secretary, waved at us and then left.

“What’s worse, the punishment we're going to get in there,” Siwon nodded his head to the door that lead to the principal’s office, “Or the one waiting for you when you get home?” He asked.

“Shut up, it’s not like we did anything that bad, besides, Mom has a soft spot for all that romantic stuff, so maybe he’ll give me a break.” Siwon just raised he eyebrows at me. It still must be weird for him for me to refer to ‘Jae’ as my mom too. Or maybe it’s just cause my mom is a guy. Though I know we’re not the only kids in school with same gender parents... maybe it’s weird because we all go to school together. So, maybe it will be easier for everyone to get used to and accept it, once Mom and Dad graduate...

“Mrs. MC Dow, will see you now.” The Secretary said. We all stood up. This was it.

We entered the office and noticed there were four chairs squeezed in, in front of her desk. We said hello and sat down.

“All right, now who going to be the brave one and speak first?” She started. Well since this is all my fault technically, though really it’s also the traitor Kibum’s fault as well, or really it's the girl that he was talking to’s fault, didn’t she realize he was in the middle of important secret work? Yeah... it’s so her fault.

“Well, since this is technically my fault, I guess I will, Mame.” I said. She nodded for me to continue as the guys nodded at me in agreement. Oh yeah, I was so feeling the love my friends have for me... not. “See, Mame, I like this girl...”

I then told her everything. I hadn’t planned on telling her everything, just why we were in the cafeteria. We were there to practice a play. But then I would have to explain what play and why so I ended up just telling her everything. Starting from the real tissue story, to the original plan I had for today, to all of the plans that were made later and then ruined. I ended it with a “And that’s what you walked in on, Mame.” She had been previously leaning forward as I talked and she now leaned back against her chair.

“I see, well that’s quite a story you have there, Mr. Kim, you're quite lucky to have such great and loyal friends as you do.” Great, yes, loyal...

“Yes, Mame.” I waited for her response to my sad love story.

“However, this does not excuse any one of you for skipping class,” For half a second I thought she would have some compassion for me, cause of my sad love story. Then I realized if she were that way, she wouldn’t be principal. I was doomed. “But, like I said, I think you can consider yourself lucky, Mr. Kim, that you have such loyal friends, because I am sure you are unaware of this, but I was visited by one of your friends just a few moments ago.” When? I didn’t see anyone enter her office. “I believe you have already mentioned her name quite a few times in that story you told me.” WHAT!!!!

“Eun Sun? Bae Eun Sun came to see you?” Shock me, shock me.

“Yes she did.”

“What did she say?” Was I being too rude... I don’t care. She smiled a bit so I guess it was okay even if I was.

“She said that it was her fault that you were all out of class today. She said that you were practicing a show that she wanted you to perform for her at lunch...”

“She knew about the show, how did she know?”

“Do not interrupt me Chang Min.”

“I am sorry Ms. MC.”

“Opps.” This was from Kyuhyun. We all turned to him.

“You have something to say Mr. Cho?” The Principal asked.

“Well, umm, I might have let it slip out to a few people about what we were doing in the cafeteria, after we all went back to our classes.” He said. Might have?!?

“Is Eun Sun in your class?” I asked.

“Yeah, but I didn’t think she was listening when I told people... but I guess she did.”

“Yeah, I guess so, WAIT, does that mean she now knows I like her?” This was SO not the way I wanted her to find out. Damn you Cho Kyuhyun, damn you. That’s two strikes for you today, two, count’em one, two.

“No, I didn’t say what the play was about or anything, just that we were all doing it for her.” Oh.

“Oh.” I said.

“Yes, well, as I was saying she came in and took the blame for you all, though now that I know she had nothing to actually do with it I should still punish you.” I lowered my head. “But I wont.” I snapped my head back up. “I think today has proven to be enough punishment for you in itself, wouldn’t you agree?”

“Yes, Mame.” I said happily.

“Right then, you're excused.” And just like that, our meeting with the principal was over. We then left her office. I have never felt more relieved, but I was also shocked. WHY had Eun Sun taken the blame for us? And more importantly was she still expecting us to give her a show? I looked out the front office window, and as fate had it, there she was, Eun Sun, walking by the front office with a couple of her friends. Impulse took over as I quickly left the main office.

“Bae Eun Sun.” She stopped walking, turned around, spotted me, and smiled.

“Hey, Chang Min oppa.” She said. She started walking over to me. My mind froze. I had come out here for a reason. What was it? By the time she was only a foot or so away from me I ended up saying the first thing that came into my head.

“Why did you take the blame for us?” She blushed. Did I say something embarrassing, I didn’t compliment her... did I?

“Oh, that... I did it.... because I wanted to.” I will never understand girls.

“You wanted to get in trouble?” She laughed.

“No, silly, I wanted to help you.”

“You mean me and the guys?”

“No, just you.” My mind froze again. This was it. If there was ever a more perfect time to ask her out, I missed it. Now, was the perfect time to me. I took a deep breath.

“Eun Sun, can I ask you something?”

“You just did, but you can ask me another.” I laughed. She was so easy to talk to.

“Do, you think, I mean , would you like, do you want...” BEEEEEEP. Lunch periods were over so the bell was back. We all now had a minute to get to our next classes.

“Oh, could you ask me later?” She asked when the beeping stopped.

“Umm...”

“Better yet, just call me when you get home today, that way we won’t have any interruptions. I get home around four o’clock today so don’t call me till after then, kay.” I just nodded, and she nodded back and waved goodbye. I waved back.

I had a phone date with Bae Eun Sun! I walked in half a daze to my next class. It would have been a full daze but Siwon keep pounding me with questions and teasing me about my upcoming ‘date’. My next and last class was Biology (honors). And it went by pretty quickly. I was expecting it to drag on but we had a Substitute teacher today so most of class was spent just talking with my friends, so it actually went by fairly fast.

“Hey, I got a great idea on how you can show Eun Sun your affection.” Ryeowook said.

“No need, he already got a phone date with her, he’ll ask her out then.” Siwon said.

“You're going to ask her out over the phone?” This came from the girl who sits behind me, Park Ming Jung was her name.

“What’s wrong with that?” She just shook her head. Another girl who was sitting on Ming Jung’s desk said...

“The asking out story is one all girls tell each other. It’s like the event the whole relationship is based around. She’d be so embarrassed to tell others that you asked her out over the phone.” She said.

“Yeah, it’s not very romantic.” Said Ming Jung.

“Or intimate.” The other girl said.

“Or even all that personal.” Ming Jung said.

“Okay, Okay, I get it, asking her out over the phone is a bad idea, then what am I suppose to do then?” I asked.

“Umm.. hello, I believe I was about to tell you my idea.” Said Ryeowook as he waved his hand in front of me. Oh, yeah.

“Oh, yeah, what is it?” He smiled, happy to have the attention back on him.

“Okay, so I was thinking since the singing didn’t work, maybe we can do something else you'er good at, so I was brainstorming ..”

“Wait, when did you do this?”

“Just now, while the Sub was explaining our assignment.”

“Oh, go on.”

“Right, so I was brainstorming and I thought, dancing, everyone knows you're good at dancing. So I propose that you, me, Siwon, and Kibum do that dance we did at the Dance Off last year.”

“You mean the famous one that came in third place?” Kibum added with a smile. Where’d he come from, wasn’t he on the other side of the room like two seconds ago?

“You mean the one that helped us gain our popularity, though Min and I were already popular so it was really to help you guys out.” Siwon added.

“Ha Ha.” Kibum said.

“Wait, what about Kyuhyun, he performed with us last year...?”

“He can’t, he got some family thing after school.” Ryeowook said. I stared at him waiting for him to explain further.

“I text messaged him like two minutes ago, and that’s what he said.” Explanation accepted, though I briefly wondered what the ‘family thing’ could be. We all nodded. Moving on.

“So when do we do this, tomorrow, cause I was kinda hoping to ask her...?”

“See, you never let me finish, if you did you would know that my plan... that is if everyone still even remembers the dance,” We all nodded, of course I remember, Mom and Dad make me do it at home for them at least once a week. Not that I mind. “That we do this after school, in the Junior/Senior parking lot, for all to see.” He finished.

“That’s brilliant.” Siwon said. He was amazed. As was I, why didn’t I think of that? I mean what girl doesn’t like to have a group off fairly good looking guys dance just for her. The girls near us nodded their approval of the idea. But wait.

“Won’t we get run over?” I asked. I mean it was a parking lot, and Juniors and Seniors aren’t exactly the best drivers, and it’s usually a mad rush to leave in the parking lot after school. I think I might be a tad too young to die for the one I love. And it would suck if she doesn’t even like me back and I died for her. I don’t want to die.

“We wont get hit, no one would dare hit the br - son of Kim Jaejoong hyung and... Yunho hyung.” Siwon reassured me. Yeah that could be true. Unless stupid West Kanya or one of his cronies was behind the wheel. Then we’d be road kill for sure. “Come on, this is a great idea.” Siwon added.

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t do it. I will, if you guys do it with me.”

“We will.” They all said. I love my friends. So it was settled. We decided that it would be Ryeowook’s job to make sure that Eun Sun didn’t leave the school and in fact, he would be the one to bring her to the parking lot, while, Siwon and myself would go down to the music room and grab the/a boom box. (I would get it, Siwon was the look out). And Kibum’s job was to get the music, he said he knew a girl who had the song on her because she used it in a presentation like a week ago, so the CD should still be in the classroom with the rest of the projects. So it was all set. Once the bell rung we would go to our respected places, and meet back up in the Junior/Senior parking lot. This also gave some time for the parking lot to clear a little and not be so littered with traffic, and together, in front of everyone, especially Eun Sun, we would dance to the dance that won third place in the Dance Off last year.

We would dance to the song ‘Caught Up’ by Usher. I love that song, no really I do.
